Activision wants GTA 5's sales record back

4.6
Activision hopes to reclaim the record for the biggest video game launch in history before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The record was held by the publisher's Call of Duty series prior to the release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 last month.

GTA 5 generated $1 billion in global retail sales in just three days. In the UK, it has already surpassed sales of former record breaker Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and should overtake FIFA 13's lifetime sales total in a matter of days, MCV reports.

Activision UK senior brand manager Kevin Flynn told the site: "Congratulations to the team at Rockstar for their success. We look forward to getting the record back before the next GTA title."

In early September, prior to GTA 5's release, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.

"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said. "We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."

Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. The game will also be a launch title on Xbox One and PS4 later in the month.

Ninjosh Call of duty ghost will get some sales but not as much as gta 5.

I honestly think it will get close to beating GTA V but won't pass it or if it does, not by much at all

This I agree with because GTA V is just amazing.

Meet They won't beat it. People are starting to hate cod.

Same excuse that's been said since every game after MW2.

Try again.

That's exactly right. People don't understand, it will always sell very well.

We older gamers who played the Call of Duty series from the beginning are the ones that aren't going to buy it. The thing is though, when all of us left/leave that series to play other titles, younger and newer players always fill our spot there along with millions of those who haven't given up on the series, or those who just buy it because there other friends are buying it. Whether we like it or not, CoD will continue to grow for as long as this cycle continues.

I've been playing Call of Duty since I got Call of Duty 2 for my 360 the year it was released. I still enjoy the game.

Mobil LMFAO CoD will never beat the record. They are just a bunch of Money ******!

You don't make as much money as them.

I have more chance of sprouting wings than CoD outselling GTA V.
