Xbox One: No real name usage online at launch

4.5
Xbox One owners will not be able to identify themselves by their real names via Xbox Live when the system launches this November.

A Microsoft rep has confirmed that the implementation of new functionality to allow gamers to use their real names on Xbox Live has been 'postponed'.

"While real identities continue to be part of our plans for the experience on Xbox One, at launch, customers will continue to search for friends using their Gamertags," the rep told Kotaku.

"Our teams are working hard to deliver a quality experience for Xbox One. This means prioritizing some features and sometimes postponing others for a later update," they added.

Microsoft has previously stated that Xbox One players would have the option to identify themselves on Xbox Live by either their Gamertags or real names.

But a recent video demonstration of Xbox One's Friends app showed friends listed by their Gamertags only.

PS4 players will be encouraged to attach their real names to their PSN accounts on the console, which has an all-new interface that places a heavy focus on deeply integrated social interaction.

Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date of November 22, 2013 in 13 markets. The Xbox One price has been set at £430 / €500 / $500.

I think some are missing the point I don't think it replaces your gamer tag but rather you can add your real name to your tag so friends can still refer to each other by name or search by name as well as gamertag.

Hence you may misspell a friends gamertag and cant find him but if he has his name selected as well you can search by name.

Its not a selling point for me and something that I could take it or leave it but I suppose a number of people are after it hence its inclusion.

if them use your real name just change it to your gamertag from xbox 360 live

They're not talking about removing gamertags, they want a search engine for the Xbox One in order to find your friends even when you don't know the GT they use. Microsoft has not yet created this but yes it will be an add on to the Xbox One in the future.

I would like to stay with my gamer tag that is a big deal for me.

Don't see the big deal behind this, in my opinion I would rather use my GT than my name.
