Microsoft: Xbox One sell-outs at launch are "inevitable"

4.6
Xbox One's launch on 22nd November will be Microsoft's greatest ever product launch, with over 10 "billion dollar IPs" in the field, corporate vice president Phil Harrison has told Eurogamer. The manufacturer is "working hard" to ensure that there are no shortages, but Harrison feels that the console is bound to sell out at some retailers.

"We hope so," he said, when asked whether those who hadn't preordered would be able to find a console. "There are a few weeks to go between now and launch. Pre-orders have been unprecedented. It will mean Xbox One by far and away the largest launch we've ever done on a global basis and on a UK basis. And we work carefully with our retail partners to make sure we have as much capacity and inventory as possible.

"Inevitably, there will be situations where demand outstrips supply. But we work hard to minimise the impact of that," he continued.

Asked whether the console might sell out during the Christmas period, Harrison kept his cards close to his chest. "It's hard to predict, but the demand is very high. We will do everything we can to get as much inventory into our retail partners, because we want to sell them. There's no desire on our part to lose a sale or hold back inventory."

Big Phil's American counterpart Phil Spencer (boss of Microsoft Studios) has already promised that there won't be store shortages in the US. "There might be a line," he said, "but I don't want it to be that if you didn't pre-order in September, you can't get one."

It's been suggested that the next generation of console hardware will be the last, as the idea of a fixed-spec box beneath your TV goes out of fashion. Harrison doesn't see it that way - he feels that consoles can co-exist with disruptive emerging platforms like mobile and tablet.

"You're seeing a lot of growth in console but you're also seeing a lot of growth in gaming fullstop, whether it's on mobile phones, tablets or consoles and a number of new entrants. So the games market overall is in an incredibly strong position.

i5-4670k Lol M$ are so ambitious, do they really think people will buy new consoles when games are coming out on current gen consoles? Its so highly illogical...

I am..I also have a few IRL friends that are. We all have the full amount of money down.

Tons of people are getting the new consoles.

Dr-J Well a couple of months ago they said they are making 25x more consoles than Sony for launch

I thought the preorder number was much greater for ps4 though
No, Microsoft have much greater manufacturing capabilities than Sony.

Well I did some research, and the total game preorders went as follows: http://icap.me/i/UXMBynp4lM.png Although that is for games and only the top ten, I would say PS4 is much more popular (400k game preorders more popular)

It's also available in more places.... Look where Xbox is launching compared to Sony

I have a Xbox One preordered, and won't be buying a PS4 this year. But I constantly see you posting bs everywhere.

That explains the difference in pre orders, but also keep in mind i read somewhere that in Argentina it will cost over $1400 (whatever that is converted to their currency)

@pcgaming, that's what I basically said without listing the countries lol
Dr-J, you never said if you were talking about the Xbox One and the PS4. It could have been taken in either way.

The PS4 is launching in nearly 3 times as much countries and yet the Amazon games pre-orders are pretty much neck on neck. If anything, you could say that the Xbox One is winning on game pre-orders (from Amazon)

Of course it will sell out at certain retailers. lol

I'm glad I got my Day One edition. But on topic, sell-outs are inevitable but hopefully they aren't as bad as previous years'.
