Xbox One can run four apps simultaneously, allows sign-in for 6 users

4.5
Microsoft was showing the Xbox One at this year’s TGS and confirmed some details about the machine’s multi-tasking abilities and more.

The firm was demonstrating the console’s somewhat less known features to Destructoid. Microsoft’s Albert Penello’s reportedly showed the console’s ability to run four applications simultaneously. It’ll only run one game at at a time, rather obivously.

Switching between apps is similar to mobile functionality, with the OS allowing you to choose between boxes represent apps or games on the home screen.

Xbox One will support multiple sign-ins, with up to six users live at once. Kinect will decide the leader based on who’s holding the controller. Kinect will also recognize your voice among others in the room and launch games with your saves and settings.

Furthermore, Kinect will allow you to sign-in by just waving your hands, and will then pull all your details and saves from the cloud to the console.

Halo4 I thought it was 8 people, not 6?

It does support 8 controllers, but if you read the article, I think what they are saying is you can have up to 6 people signed in on ONE controller. "Kinect will decide the leader based on whos holding the controller."

Multi-tasking is cool but will surely use precious power while running the apps in the backgroud. I would prefer no multi-tasking abilities and for the Xbox one to put ALL it's resources into powering the games i'm buying the console for.

HDITeRRoRiZeI I'm having doubts about this consoles GPU and CPU power compared to PS4...
Yeah the PS4 is 50% more powerful according to multiple devs.

And only one of those Devs have a name

Exactly. Plus, Digital Foundry ran a side by side comparison of the consoles(with video proof) which included graphs detailing frame rates and such. Both consoles' performances were almost identical. Occasionally, the X1's eSRAM would allow the X1 to load a bit faster. Occasionally, the PS4's larger GPU without eSRAM would momentarily spike a rise in frames per second. Overall, the two systems performances were identical. Even at the most extreme (yet incredibly rare) differences, the range in graphical/computational differences was NEVER more than 20% and that was only momentary. Never 50%, people draw that number off the fact that the PS4 will has 18 CUs(Compute Units) and the Xbox One only has 12. However, The Xbox One actually has 14 CUs, two of which are disabled until an update at a later date. Also, only 14 of the PS4's CUs are used for rendering, the other 4 are solely for the PS eye camera. The X1's Kinect camera's CUs are self-contained and thus the X1 uses all of it's CUs for computation/rendering. So, the comparison of "12CUs vs. 18CUs" is inaccurate. A more accurate comparison would be "X1's 12CUs vs. PS4's 14CUs." Then, within a year, when MS activates the 2 dormant CUs, the correct comparison will be "14CUs vs. 14 CUs." Google it for further evidence. There is no need for concern over the power/graphical differences between the systems. Don't base your decision on that rumor alone. Also, keep in mind that this test was ran on the consoles in their current state and we have already been told that there will be graphic tweaks and driver upgrades in the Day One patch. Who knows how much Microsoft will improve with that patch. Remember, Microsoft is a software company, after all.

I dont think it need 6 players....

If you have a lot of friends you do..... Many people aren't anti-social and "older" kids should only be playing a 500$ console.Furthermore, most people hang out with their friends and now they can all play on their profile instead of some random one.

SliceFX And then there's the PS4. The thing that can't even multitask...

We still have 3 months to go, alot of things can get added in that period.

Actually, we have less than 2 months.
