Xbox One won’t get a lot of “stuff” 360 has for “for a while”

Xbox One will miss out on some features Xbox 360 has had for a while now, according to Microsoft senior director of product management and planning Albert Penello.

IGN posed to Penello that Microsoft’s promise of all these great Xbox One features might be miss-selling the console to territories that won’t be receiving them, he replied, “I think even in the U.S., there’s going to be a lot of stuff that was on 360 that isn’t going to be on Xbox One for a while.

“Y’know, it’s an interesting dynamic that you find yourself in with console launches, but particularly when you’re coming from a super mature platform… in the old days of console transitions, the expectation of what would be moving to the next console was basically isolated to games. And if you think about all the stuff we’ve done with Xbox 360 and how much it’s different in the last ten years, you basically have ten years of innovation, ten years of experiences, and then, trying to take that and build an entirely new platform, with new hardware and a new software architecture.

“I mean, I totally understand people’s frustrations, and it’s hard to give an answer beyond the fact that, from my seat, it’s a console transition and this is part and parcel. There’s a lot of things that we’ll talk about in our vision for the product that aren’t going to be there at launch.”

Then came some Xbox One TV talk, which seems to be Microsoft’s ‘go-to’ topic as of late. Penello continued, “TV, if you want to continue, would be another criticism. We talk a lot about TV and that’s only going to work basically in Japan and the U.S. at launch where you have HDMI-in scenarios, so you’ll say ‘hey, what if I have a terrestrial over the air?’

“We won’t have a solution for that right away, but we still sell it as part of the vision. So it’s honest criticism and you’d love to have the new launch be everything that you had before and more, but unfortunately it’s an untenable [proposition].”

What do you think of Microsoft selling this “vision” as one complete package to territories that won’t be able to experience it for a while? Let us know what you think below.

TheUnholy1994 That actually annoys me so f*cking much how USA get everything first and that applies to everything not just gaming

The Majority of the time yes the USA get it first, but on the other hand there are things that Europe get first etc. Eventually everybody will have it this is why its annoying me when people say oh America get this and get that. Don't forget Sony and Microsoft have to open their services globally and it all cannot be done in a day. There is a saying "Rome was not built in a day" Which applies here. Good things come to those that wait.

True. But how long do we have to wait? Will It be years again? bearing in mind that netflix was out for years, then eventually came to europe like a year and a bit or so ago.

raefon oh how to continue make people move to the PS4 instead.

Hmmmmm we are releasing a console that really does nothing better than your Xbox 360, doesn't play any of your old games, is basically a media centre that well cant do that well either unless your in maybe the US or Japan because hey why not try to do it where Sony is and the look at Microsoft as that odd competitor which is like the red headed step child.

Wow they really have just made my mind up to ditch any loyalty and switch to the PS4.

I wish people would either keep up with gaming news or just not comment. It makes you look ignorant.(your grammar doesn't help, either) First of all, the TV function will work anywhere in the world, so long as your cable/sat receiver has an HDMI out. If your TV service doesn't hook up via HDMI.. well, then it is time for you to upgrade. Welcome to the 21st century. I don't think they should even bother with worrying about support for terrestrial air waves. It is a thing of the past. That's like hooking a VCR up to your 3D HDTV. No thanks, I'll stick with my HDMI. If you don't think the Xbox One can do anything the 360 couldn't, you are clearly ignorant about next-gen consoles.

By the way, your precious PS4 will not have all of it's functionality available at launch either. So, if you are going to criticize Microsoft for that, you better start criticizing Sony as well. It is unreasonable to expect either console to have everything there at launch. Every device with an OS is constantly upgrading, improving and adding new features. Look at the 360, they added the web browser, Netflix and more apps than I could count, avatars, nxe, upgraded communication codex, etc. Things will be constantly evolving. I pray the system is not done innovating on Day One. Of course they will be adding things, tweaking things and what not. Don't be a fool.

Uhm, you are claiming others don't read. In this article it states that ONLY Japan and the USA will have the TV functionality at launch. And yes, it doesn't really do anything better than the 360 at launch like they stated in the article. Maybe better hardware, but what's the point if Microsft are concentrating on making a media centre instead of a games console. Might as well just buy a PC if you wanted all the stuff Microsoft is trying to include. It's pathetic. Just trying to appeal to everyone although I doubt non-gamers are interested in an Xbox One (no they really aren't) and so it's a pathetic strategy. A massive company like them and they don't even perform market research. Now how ignorant is that.

Lmao. First of all, I am sure their market research was much more intuitive than your opinion. There are many gamers, myself and everyone I know included, that love the idea of incorporating all of my entertainment into one system. It is highly innovative. Should I not buy a smartphone because it can stream video and real phone enthusiasts only want to make phone calls? That sounds as moronic as your negative statement about the Xbox One's additional features.

Secondly, If you want to argue that Japan and the U.S. will be the only places able to utilize the TV features. First, stroll on over to IGN.com and read the full interview. This post is edited down. Penello went on to state that the TV functions would work globally at launch, as long as your receiver has an HDMI out. Please, go read the full interview. As I stated, if you don't keep up with gaming news and you are just going to read these little snippets, then just don't comment. It truly does make you appear ignorant.

Finally, some features will require updates. That means they won't be there immediately. He did not say that none of the new features would be there. You fanboys just hear what you want. It will still do a lot that the 360 can't, the rest will follow shortly behind. This must be your first console generation transition. Your precious PS4 is no different, several of the new features will not be there at launch but will soon follow. This is simply how it works. This article, the full article anyhow, was originally written by IGN's Cam Shea. A man well known to be a Sony fanboy.

What does it feel like to be so easily manipulated? Are you even aware when it is happening?
"Welcome to the 21 century?" The Xbox One controller still uses AA bateries. LOL pathetic. You call that 21 century?

Maybe you should become a English teacher and teach all the noobs a lesson. Loser.

Yes, the fact that I took full advantage of an education, offered to us all, makes me a loser. Please, continue to display your lack of intelligence to us all.

I still feel as though they have moving forward as far as innovation. I mean you have to have a firm foundation to build upwards, this is the exact same case. The foundation has been built and it will soon turn into a great console.
