PS3 owners furious over GTA V download delay

4.5
Gamers who paid £50 to pre-order Grand Theft Auto V via the PlayStation Network have been told that pre-downloads will not begin until Monday.

Rather than walk into a shop on Tuesday, or hope that the post arrives on time, many PlayStation 3 owners elected to pay full price for the game in order to guarantee they’d get it on day one.

They were told they’d be able to start pre-installing the game today, but now Sony has confirmed that the process won’t begin until Monday – which may not give those with slower broadband connections enough time to download the massive 17GB file.

And even those with faster connections are likely to run into the problem of so many other people suddenly putting a burden on the network.

Pre-installing is a common practise for larger PC games, which allow you to download a large section of the game before it’s released. The idea is that the download is useless on its own, but last month hackers were able to derive a full list of the licensed music tracks and details of the game’s plot due to Sony’s lax security.

Sony were forced to apologise and it’s hard not to imagine that the mistake isn’t behind this new delay.

‘I can confirm that GTA V will be available to pre-download on Monday the 16th September,’ said a Sony spokesman on their official forum.

As you can imagine many fans have not taken the news well, with the following a snippet from those on the forum:

‘Thanks for TAKING as for FOOLS!!! You said on the 13th WE WANT IT ON THE 13TH. Most of us preordered from PSN because we could preload it on the 13th’, said member Ceois. ‘I didn’t top up my account with 50pounds just so you can SCAM ME! I want my money BACK!’

‘Same. First time pre-ordering digitally and the last time. What a [DELETED] shambles Sony. No point in asking for the £50 back from my wallet I guess. Thats the part of the deal you will hold up – no refunds,’ added vertigo9219.

JPEG I knew PS3 sucks but now it sucks even more :D

I don't think you quite understand what pre-download is son. Pre-download is getting the majority of a game downloaded prior to it's release; then you download the rest (25% or less) of the game a few days before it releases. This makes games playable at minute one of release. This has absolutely little to do the "PS3 sucking". in all honesty, 17 GB to download still shouldn't take more than a couple of hours even for slow connections. And for one last note, stop being an Xbox fanboy who doesn't even know that Xbox doesn't get downloadable games until about 2 weeks after their initial release and then has to download all 17GB at one time (sucks to suck).

Oh yeah and you can no longer say that because the One gets the digital version the day of release. So you stop being a PS fanboy. But on topic, this does suck for anyone that chose this option. Oh well, still going to be a sick game and its worth the wait/download!

"This has absolutely little to do the "PS3 sucking". in all honesty, 17 GB to download still shouldn't take more than a couple of hours even for slow connections." are you crazy???? some of my friends on ps3 will download a map pack for call of duty, and it takes over 15 hours since they connection is that bad. so a basically 1gb takes 15 hours, imagine 17. so yes, predownloading it does make a huge difference for some ppl.

That's true but this has nothing to do with Sony. It was Rockstar that demanded a hold on the downloads.

Agreed. Rockstar is doing this just to try to cut back on spoilers. As to sir greco, I don't think you can have much of an online experience if you have that slow of a connection. A single GB in about 15 hours shouldn't even had put buying the game via online marketplace an option. 17 GB, each taking around 15 hours each, means that a person would have to have their playstation on for a total of over week before the game could even finish doenloading. Nobody with an Internet that slow should consider online purchases or even online play due to their connectivity being too slow to keep pace with other players or meet demands of games. Sorry man but slow Internet shouldn't really be an excuse for online purchase rage.

I would be pretty upset if I were one of them too.

That 17 GB download is going to take hours to download and for them to delay when they can start the download is awful.

Raci Well thats your problem if your ps3 dont read disk or your just to lazy to go get the disk

I don't really see it as lazy, some people would rather just download it instead of having a hard copy of the game.

I'm not one of those people though, I like having a physical disk just in case it somehow gets corrupted.

maybe they are trying to save the environment by not driving to go get it ;)

They should really get better security instead of screwing people over.

Oh shut up. A lot of places will be completely sold out on Day 1 and it's also more convenient to not have to run from store to store looking for a copy.
