Console war will 'reinvigorate' flagging industry, says Sony

The next battle for console market share between Sony and Microsoft will help bring a new era of prosperity to the games industry, a PlayStation executive has claimed.

PlayStation America boss Jack Tretton was asked by Fox Business on Wednesday for his views on the US games retail sector contracting for fifteen consecutive months.

"We're talking about the seventh year of a console and I guess if you used a TV analogy, you might say, boy, the re-runs of a show we released seven years ago aren't doing as well as before," he replied.

"The new machine, and the new console war is going to reinvigorate the industry," he added.

Market interest in physical games has waned for several years, following what is considered an all-time industry peak during 2009 and 2010.

Since then, several publishers have become bankrupt (including THQ, Midway and Atari US) along with scores of games studios closing (Leamington Spa based Blitz becoming the most recent).

Major retailers, including GAME, have fallen into administration as debts have mounted, while much of the developer workforce has moved from triple-A games production to the fast-growing mobile and free-to-play markets. It is also commonly said that the flagging games market has led to more conservatism by publishers as profit margins are squeezed.

New consoles, said Tretton, will be the answer to these issues.

"This will be the biggest launch in history, and you are going to see validation that gaming is healthier than it's ever been, and the console is at the top of the entertainment pyramid," he said.

Tretton was also asked to discuss the advantages the PS4 has over its newest rival system, Xbox One. In response, he claimed that Sony is delivering a more powerful machine at $100 less with, he said, the best and most diverse console launch game line-up.
Sony has confirmed a PS4 release date of November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe. The console will be available in 32 countries this holiday priced at £349 / €399 / $399.

In Japan, the system's launch has been delayed to February 22.

Only thing I can see is we will have to wait for the Quarterly results of how many consoles have been sold etc and compare from there :).


I think it'll be pretty even but the PS4 will come out on top, seeing as they have sold over a million pre-orders of the console.

Yeah it is actually, haha everything has changed since a couple of month back.

But console wars could be good as well.


At first the xbox looked like it lost the race but after Microsoft started listening to the community it became a pretty even race. Just like the 360 and PS3, it just comes down to personal preference.

Why do you need to post it in the PS4 news, I doubt anyone cares what console you buy. Even if you are buying the worse console haha.


The worse console my *** , the ps4 has some downsides while the xbox one has some downsides, in my opinion im getting the xbox one becuase i have always been a fan of the xbox. so dont say which one is worse until you have actually played them both


Well I was a Xbox only owner since 2002 so I think I got a pretty good understanding of xbox consoles and their games. Why would you want to stick with MS next gen when PS4 seems better in every way. You are also not forced to buy Kinect and PS+ seems to be better then Xbox live with free games every month.

Also Playstation exclsuives seem to be better overall, maybe not at launch but overall and it's definitely a good change to try all these different games on PS4 next gen.


Both consoles are great and both of their exclusives are great also people need to stop flaming over the consoles which will never happen and wake up and smell the coffee both consoles will do tremendously well.


They probably will be both good, but I hate when people say Xbox is going to be better when they have only had a Xbox and not tried Playstation. I used to be one of those people that used to praise Xbox and thought I would never buy a playstation. But after buying a PS3 I can honestly say I am loving the change. The only thing I don't like on it is the lack of ability to do a private chat in a game or party chat but this is fixed in the PS4.

ANd the PS4 seems to be better in every way, so it's going to be really hard for the PS4 not to do better then Xbone specially with the $100 price difference, better control and now with competitive online play.
