Xbox Live real-world currency rollout starts 'late 2013'

4.5
Microsoft will begin the Xbox Live Marketplace's transition from Microsoft Points to real-world currencies in 'late 2013', the company has confirmed.

"Our goal is to make this transition as easy as possible for you," it said in an update issued today.

"After the next Xbox 360 system update, when you go to buy something or redeem a Microsoft Points card or code on your console with your Microsoft account, we'll add to your account an amount of currency equal to or greater than the Xbox Marketplace value of your Microsoft Points, which will be retired," it explained.

Those with MS Points Cards after the transition will still be able to redeem them via Xbox Live for "equal to or greater" sums of local currency, assured Microsoft.

The company has also confirmed plans to release new 'Xbox Gift Cards' available in your local currency through online retailers and in local retail stores.

The new Xbox dashboard update and its real-world currency has been in beta testing in recent weeks. Uproar was sparked when testers noticed the significantly diminished value of their MS Points when converted to real money, but Microsoft was quick to clarify that the inflated beta test prices were "an unintended error".

I quite liked the MSP system but I suppose this doesn't really matter, just means people won't really be able to sell MSP codes any more xD

Tac-45 Okay so if I go to Walmart and get a 20$ Card. It better be only 20$ Because if its $20.95 I better get $20.95 on my Account.

Well if your talking about tax then no you won't get point equal to the cost plus tax.

I do like the MSP system, but it happens that when I buy something I don't have enough to buy another item with 30 or 40 points I've got left.
That's why I think this will be a good update!

I already have the real World currency due the XBL Beta :)
It's really handy and I prefer this over MSP.

No, like the PS3, we will be able to buy like a $25 pre-paid card. And then you have 25 bucks on your account.

This dosent really affect anything MSP just has sentimental value to it nothing more nothing less. 1600 msp is just $20 what Microsoft is doing is just ditching the name and keeping it simple. This is what PS has been doing
