Microsoft 'improves' Xbox One GPU clock speed

4.5
Marc Whitten, corporate vice president of Xbox and chief product officer for Xbox One, says Microsoft has increased the clock speed on the console's GPU by about 6.6 per cent.

Speaking on the latest Major Nelson podcast, Whitten outlined a number of changes to the system as it "gets close to the final performance envelope".

"This is the thing I think people are going to see as we get into Gamescom and people get their first look at new things since E3," he said. "This is the time where developers have the final dev kits in their hands, they're really working closely with us on how things have come together. There's some things that have really started to come together quite well."

A mixture of optimisation software and initial conservative estimates has meant the GPU can reach 853mhz - effectively allowing developers to put more demand on the system.

"Since E3, an example is we've dropped in what we internally call our mono driver. It's our graphics driver that really is 100 per cent optimised for the Xbox One hardware," Whitten said.

"You start with the base Direct-X driver, and then you take out all parts that don't look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really, really optimises that experience. Almost all of our content partners have picked it up now and I think it's made a really nice improvement."

He continued: "That's the time where you start tweaking the knobs. Either your theory was right dead on, or you were a little too conservative, or you were a little too aggressive. It's actually been really good news for us, an example of that is we've tweaked up the clock speed on our GPU from 800mhz to 853mhz."

Xbox One will be available in 21 markets this November. The Xbox One price has been set at £425 / €499 / $499.

bingbing10 Literally this is a joke of an over-clock, if a PC gamer was to only be able to achieve this they would be hiding the fact not telling everyone

You can't compare a pc to a console. They're made completely differently, and you could be clocking at like 4x that of the xbox one yet it will still seem ****.

So apart from the fact that both consoles are running using an amd jaguar CPU with an app graphics solution , plus the fact that xbox one is running on a full windows 8 software and uses ddr3 ram , no this is nothing like a computer ?!!

You do realize a PC and The Xbox 360 are exactly alike? The only differences are the firmware they are running.

I don't think you'll notice the difference.

It's better than nothing, so stop complaining!

It won't add anything to the console. If anything, it'll make more unstable. And if they have the all mighty Cloud servers, then why are they bumping up the GPU?

I 100% agree with you.

DubleJayJ An extra 53mhz isn't gonna bring any noticeable improvement.

It's actually a lot.

Actually it's not. How about you learn what you're talking about first.

Wagering I'm glad they're still tweaking.

Im not... I would rather them stress test the finish project for at least 5 to 6 month to prevent any unforseen system failures within the next year. I dont feel like being bothered with any recalls or f'in mail in rebates or refunds. If they keep tweeking with it closer to the release date i may just hold off on my pre order and wait 5 to 6 months before i pay it off.

exactly why would anyone want to complain lol :p

Just can't see the point in that improvement, 53MHz won't do much at all.
