Microsoft confirms self-publishing for Xbox One

4.6
Following a report from earlier today, Microsoft has confirmed the Xbox One console will support self-publishing for independent developers. Retail systems will also double as development kits, meaning any Xbox One purchased in a store can be used for game development and testing purposes.

"Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development," Xbox corporate VP Marc Whitten told Engadget. "That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We'll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August."

Before this revision, Microsoft's Xbox One policies required developers to be paired with third-party publishers or publishing deals from Microsoft itself, making no exceptions for self-publishing.

DopestDope_Eva i love this feature of self publishing. but it will only apply to a select amount of people who have the tools and time to make stuff, still i like it!

Yep, indie game makers probably will enjoy this.

TheUnholy1994 They should allow us to change avatars to red and blue etc... let customize the dashboard a bit to our personal liking. Basically anything and as for hacking online multiplayer, just keep that the way is. All in all, deep customization around the dash and whatever else you guys can think of.

I agree, PC you can, that's what makes it the best gaming experience. You should be able to have a lot more customization than there already is, Sony have already announced that there will be a lot of customization so maybe Microsoft need to follow in their footsteps.

The reason PC is the best is you can change a few colours on your desktop and dependant on how your feeling the theme too, there go its best platform? No the reason its the "best" is because of how open it is and how you can literally do anything on it and you have that insane freedom.

consoles could also be classed as "best" as where pc can be upgraded etc and money can essentially mean you have an unfair advantage over others (due to parts put in etc) consoles are almost all exactly the same bar upgraded system revisions like the diffirent motherboards on xboxs all being slightly better but still the same basis

S7Pro I doubt full dev capabilities will be available on retail, there will be a major sandbox. Don't expect the DayZ dev to release DayZ for Xbox anytime soon, he'll prolly need a legitimate development kit to produce that.

The retail unit is a legitimate dev kit.

Can i just say if this means that certain home brew will be okay to use on a retail console... then I hope FreeStyleDash could be used because i love that dash so much more than i did the Metro style dash.. :-/
