Call of Duty franchise has 'never been stronger', claims Activision

4.6
The Call of Duty franchise has "never been stronger" and anticipation for Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts is "high", according to Activision publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

Speaking via an interview with IGN Hirshberg indicated that the publisher's lucrative first-person shooter franchise is at the height of its popularity.

He said: "At this moment in time, we have more people playing every month, more people logging on to play every day, a better digital business with people playing longer into the cycle of each product and purchasing more DLC and purchasing micro-DLC and purchasing season passes.

"Those are all the hard measures. How is the content we're making selling? Are people enjoying it? That seems to be going well. Then you look at the softer measures, just in terms of social media engagement and video views. Anticipation is high for Ghosts. When you're building off such a strong foundation of engaged players, that's usually a pretty good sign."

Hirshberg said Activision intends to carry forward the popularity of the series with its next entry, which will introduce numerous new features.

He added: "At the end of the day, it all comes down to us making another great game," he said. "That's why we set the stage for greatness with Ghosts by wiping the slate clean creatively, not doing another Modern Warfare game with Infinity Ward, allowing them to create an entirely new narrative and cast of characters. We've changed to a world where America is not the dominant force, but an underdog.

"That opened up new visual opportunities. It opened up new gameplay opportunities. We're shaking things up. Multiplayer is going to have new ideas. Dynamic maps are something we're doing. Character customization is something we're doing.

"The story mode is going to be...I don't know if you've seen what we [showed at E3], but it's gorgeous. It's emotional. It's got a different kind of tonality and feeling to it. It all comes down to us making a great game every time out, and I'm confident that we are going to deliver something special with Ghosts."

Offering his view on games as a medium for storytelling, Hirshberg said he feels games still "have a long way to go", but claimed that partnering with Hollywood talent such as Traffic writer Stephen Gaghan, who has written the script for Ghosts, is a step forward for the series.

"We're reaching a point of maturity as an industry where a lot of the top Hollywood talent are gamers," he said. "They grew up playing games, the same way we did. They have a natural interest in it just as consumers.

"The other thing is that people look at where the entertainment audience is migrating and where people are spending the majority of their time and money. It's an exciting industry to be involved in from that standpoint as well.

"The creative process always starts with that - what would be a fun thing to do? But the level of immersion and the level of connection you can have with the characters, the level of interest we can generate in the storylines, I think can always be improved. I think Steve Gaghan, so far he's knocking it out of the park for us."

Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Exactly, two of the best games I have EVER played, yet they both sold below 2.5 million copies in total.

Knights of the Old Republic is one of the greatest games ever created, but its release date meant that publicity wasn't great. As for Mass Effect 3, I've heard pretty terrible things about it (never played it), it can't be worse than Call of Duty though.

Mass Effect 3 was amazing besides the ending. The last two minutes was kind of messed up. It was still good just not as good as it could have been.

InsanePanda The last few Cod's have been bad and Battlefield 3 was disappointing.. the shooter genre as a whole is old, clichd and stale.. Id take Bioshock over both of them any day.

I thought Battlefield 3 was pretty good. I like BioShock, especially Infinite.

The last few Cods have been bad? The sales definitely show that idiot.

Just because something sells a lot doesn't mean it's good. Justin Bieber sell millions of his songs. Are you saying he's a great singer? I'm guessing your a CoD fanboy who thought BO2 and MW3 were the greatest games ever so this argument is pointless.

Oh so millions of people buy his CDs and go to his concert and cheer him on because they think he sucks? Are you stupid? Must be. I have bought every cod but only play Mw2 now. Why? Because I think the others suck. Just because I think they suck does not mean they do. Obviously they don't suck if they have that many people playing them and buying them. Obviously you can't get that through your thick skull. And if the games "suck", they wouldn't continue to make them.

Wow you to need to calm down. Someone might be on their period. Anyways CoD is going downhill. Don't look at sales. Look at reviews. Look at the people that have an actual job to judge these things. Also look at feedback online. For instance this topic. The majority of people that posted on this agree that CoD is getting worse. When BO2 came out everyone I know that bought it didn't even play it past Christmas. It was a disappointment. Most of them sold it back to GameStop including myself. Now all I play CoD wise is MW2. I will never base if something is good off sales. It's just stupid. Majority of CoD's sales come from pre-adolescent children who think they are cool cause they play CoD. That's a terrible way to say something is getting better.

Once again, that is your opinion idiot. It can't be going down hill if the sales are going up. And look at the people posting here? What the 100 tops that post on here that bought the game that support the franchise? Makes sense. And if they didnt buy it, they can't say its good nor bad. Most sales come from children that think they are cool? I dont think anyone buys a game to think they are cool lol, more like beer or
Cigs. Oh and look at reviews that actually mean something? Uhh go look at amazon, GameStop, ign or even g4. They all give GREAT reviews and ratings, and if they don't mean something i dont know who does lol. So please, before you post idiotic stuff, go do your research.

IGN reviews have for CoD have gone down each year... Except for BO2 with a slight increase. So please do research before you tell me to do research. Also do you not know any children? They all think they are cool when they get the new CoD. Must not have a little brother but whatever. Anyway I'm done. Kerrigan explained it very well and if you want to keep believing in your ignorance then go ahead. Also calling people an idiot and insulting them in arguments just makes you look worse.

I am also seeing this trend. I have been enjoying them less and less since Modern Warfare 2

Music-Matt People that say "They sell a lot, so it must be good" infuriate me.
Just because a game sells a lot has absolutely nothing to do with the games quality. The Last of Us is one of the best video games in the past 4-5 years. It definitely undersells CoD, but it doesn't matter because the game is phenomenal. Just because the game sells, doesn't mean it is good.

Ampz Truthfully they are right. Every year they seem to top the sales.

They don't deserve it though, I wish people would use their brains and stop buying it, the only enjoyment anyone can possibly get from the franchise is Zombies.

Sales are going up because of a simple effect I have been noticing I have been noticing, as well as others.

-6 people buy new CoD, 5 out of 6 stop playing within a few weeks.

-New CoD announced, 2 out of 6 are excited.

-Everyone in that group gets sick of the name game, states a lack of innovation and balancing issues.

-New CoD released 1 or 2 people buy it, other friends do as well just so they have a common multiplayer game.

Then you have the new generation buying the game simply because of how popular it is.

The sales aren't increasing as much as they used to, that's fact.

Not every website agrees on a definite number, so I'm giving them a benefit of the doubt.

MW2 - 7 million copies
BO1 - 7 million copies
MW3 - 6.5 million copies (Around 483 million, but 6.5 million was the number of copies I found)
BO2 - 8,333,333 copies (Divided 500 million by 60)

Total units up until Black Ops 1.
As you can see, the sales of the games are declining.

So whether or not you can put together this information is up to you, but the games aren't as popular as they used to be. Xbox Live has 40 million members alone, PSN has roughly the same. CoD fans barely make up a portion of the community.

So you can argue on something as trivial as single opinions as opposed to group opinions, the fact of the matter is that a large portion of people are unsatisfied. To see this, all you have to do is add a bunch of friends on Xbox who play CoD when a game first comes out, and watch how many stop playing by the end of the year.

I had 100 friends, by the end of the year 20 were playing while when it first was released, 90 were playing the game.
