Xbox 180: Microsoft to 'completely reverse' its DRM control on Xbox One

4.6
Update: Microsoft has released an official statement, it can be located here - http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

A new report from Giant Bomb states that Microsoft will drop its DRM control with Xbox One and the need for the console to log in online every 24 hours.

According to the GB report, the following will occur:

• No more always online requirement
• The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
• All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
• An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
• All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
• No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
• Region locks have been dropped

Discussion of the recent changes can be found within this thread - http://www.thetechgame.com/Forums/t=5363350/microsofts-announcement-about-xbox-one-19th-june-2013.html

"An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games - After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

"Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today - There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

"In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

"These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray."

The benefits are obvious - Xbox One will be usable with or without an internet connection, dispersing the fears of a vocal and outraged crowd who staged a backlash against the original online-reliant policy.

The changes also re-open the door to game rental services, the lending of games between friends and the purchase and sale of used games to anyone, anywhere without fear of DRM control.

And a region-free console will mean gamers will be able to import titles from other regions without restriction.

GTFO If Microsoft just highlighted the benefits to the drm control, it would be a different situation.
They could of just said about the Family Sharing, "Online Marketplace to sell games", Games run off hard drives etc...
The Benefits outweigh the negatives.

People are just delaying the future of gaming.

my thoughts exactly! with digital sharing my friends might have been able to barrow a game, but with disk based systems my disks won't be leaving my house(don't trust that the disk will come back in the same condition). plus i wouldn't need to switch disks when i change games(i know it's not a big deal but why have to change disks when i already have them installed). this will become a reality next gen after this.

Medion You can plug a 360 into a Xbox One, we'll just wait and see.

I really want to see this feature more, will the xbox 360 be the exact same after you plug it into the One? What is the point of it? What benifits do we get from pluging it in through the One and not just to the TV.

Exactly why don't I just play my 360 it's starting to make me think that's how it'll be supported like the 360 will have to be plugged in to the XB1 or something.

Through the HDMI in port. Just like the cable box........

dLScurry does this mean its backwards compatible with 360 discs ?

you have a 360 for that

You are stupid. Why would you even say that? He wants to know if he can still play his xbox360 games when he gets an xbox one and probably sell his xbox360
