Xbox One video: designing the console, Kinect and controller

4.4
Microsoft has sent over a video featuring insight from members of the design team behind Xbox One.

According to Carl Ledbetter, Xbox's industrial design creative director, the team started working on the project "in late 2010".

Senior industrial designer Scott Dallmeyer says: "There's a holistic approach to our design language, so you see a lot of details within the console, the sensor product and even in the controller that really tie [into] elements that are happening in the UI [and] the software.

"You look at the tiles, you look at the way the content is presented on screen, and a lot of those details are reflected in what's happening on the console. You see the different panels, the way that the very front of the console is a very clean, flat rectangular shape. We did that on purpose. We wanted those details to reflect what's happening on screen and really have that be a reflection of the content and the elements that are happening within the user interface."

Microsoft's official description of the system, which was released last week alongside the first Xbox hardware trailer, reads: "New Xbox One hardware is sleek and modern and complements any décor. The console is shaped in the 16:9 aspect ratio and employs a horizontal orientation optimized for its high-speed Blu-ray disc player. It is moulded in a deep and rich liquid black colour and includes a distinctive bevelled edge."

After last week's Xbox One reveal event was largely used to show off the hardware and and its wider entertainment capabilities, Xbox executives have said Microsoft's E3 conference on June 10 will be "all about the games".

Kinect was a major flop on 360

imgur I really hope the controller is changed in the future, it just looks bulky and uncomfortable.

Maybe if they release another version of the console(like how Xbox 360 released the Slim) they will change the controller look. I will agree though it is way to bulky looking when comparing it to the PS4 and Xbox 360 controller, plus that black part with the Xbox logo on top of the controller just adds to the bulkiness.

They should have picked a design or two more, because the look of it really doesn't look appealing. It has however been worker on for years and they seem to believe that that have the best possible system out there so we have to trust them until we get our hand on it.

Noted They started 3 years ago and just finished recently lol

Would you rather them take their time with this, or rush out a new console and everything within a years time?

How more time they take, the better it will be ;)

If they would have just rushed it out in a year's time it would have so many problems with it I guarantee it. I'm sure there will still be some small issues but hopefully nothing too big.

Every game has some small issues when its newly released ;)

Kinect isn't a game though, it's a device. But yes every game, console and device has some sort of issue.
