Microsoft pledges indie support on Xbox One

4.6
Microsoft's Xbox boss Don Mattrick has pledged support for indie developers on the new Xbox One console.

Mattrick addressed one of several hot topics surrounding the firm's new machine. News that indie developers will not be able to self-publish and that indie games will not be given a dedicated section on the Xbox One's digital marketplace sparked allegations that Microsoft had abandoned the indie scene.
One indie studio, Stealth Bastard developer Curve, went as far as to issue an official press release to declare its 'focus on PS4 development' following "the lack of independent support currently announced from Microsoft and the Xbox One."

In a recent interview with Kotaku, however, Mattrick insisted that "there's no way we're going to build a box that doesn't support" indie studios.

"We're going to have an independent creator program," said Mattrick.

"We're going to sponsor it. We're going to give people tools. We're going to give more information," he went on.

"That is something we think - I think - is important. That's how I started in the industry. There's no way we're going to build a box that doesn't support that."

Mattrick highlighted the success of indies on Xbox 360. "Indie creators exist right inside our ecosystem," he said. "Probably the best example of a huge success is Minecraft. The work that Notch did [was] pretty amazing in the PC space.

"We're going to support those guys," concluded Mattrick.

Microsoft has been forced to speak out recently on multiple topics of debate surrounding its new console, including concerns over privacy and, more crucially, its treatment of the used games market.

Xbox One was revealed at an event on May 21, when Microsoft confirmed a launch for 'later this year'.

I don't see why developers would even stay with the Xbox anymore, they can't self publish. I think that OUYA and PS4 and going to be great developer markets and I think we will see a shift in the number of devs for each console.

ShadowBoltDashie I know that Indie developers will be excited to hear this.

They will, they have some great games to make now :) I want more hilarious games for the xbox one.

It's good that they aren't giving up on Indie developers, some of them want to pursue a developing career and this will help them with that.

-Cody Most indie games were horrible, Total Miner was like the only good one.

I liked them! They were pretty good if you were bored of COD or something like that, just for the lols. Those games were pretty funny.

That was the reason I got Indie games. I got bored of other games and thought might as well give them a shot.

Same here, some of them are hilarious!

I haven't really come across any that were hilarious, I mostly got Indie games just to have something else to play.

slapshot101 They are going to support it but they won't allow indie devs to self publish, that seems kind of wishy washy.

Yeah I recently read about that, I think it's good that they won't though as they can moderate the games added so complete crap isn't added like before.
