Microsoft exec: I don't get the drama around always-on

4.2
'I don't get the drama around always-on. That's the world we live in. Deal with it.'

The creative director of Microsoft Studios has defended always-connected consoles as fresh reports circulate of a constant internet requirement for the next Xbox.

Taking to Twitter, Adam Orth said he didn’t understand the drama around an always on console, and stated that it’s part of “the world we live in”.

He finished his Tweet with the hashtag “Deal with it”.
“Sorry, I don’t get the drama around an “always on” console,” he said.

“Every device now is “always on”. That’s the world we live in. #Dealwithit.”

When appearing to be questioned by BioWare’s senior gameplay designer Manveer Heir on whether the company had learnt anything from the issues suffered by the likes of Diablo III and SimCity, and that people can lose their internet connection, Orth responded with “Electricity goes out too”.

Heir went on to state that not all places had good connections, to which the Microsoft exec retorted: “Why on earth would I live there?”.

Heir has since said however that he is good friends with Orth, and the two often joke around, telling readers “Don’t read too much into our back & forth”.

“No one in this world is as good as you think they are and no one is really as bad as you think. You see a 2D image of people on the internet," he said.

Orth also apologised for any offence caused to the cities referenced in his retort, and said: "Just the normal daily back and forth I have with Manveer. Apologies for offending non-cities. I was trolling him personally."

As the expected reveal of the next Xbox draws near, reports continue to suggest that Microsoft has opted for always-online functionality for its next-gen console.

It has been claimed that the connection is required to use the new Xbox and play games, even in single player. A previous report also claimed that each disc would come with its own activation code, meaning only the initial user can install and play the game, potentially killing off the second had market.

Hub I might just stick with the Xbox I've got for a year or two then, as this new xbox sounds like a pile of crap
It might have a better graphics and better performance but having to be connected to the Internet at all times and buy games brand new sucks.
I buy cods and fifa brand new but I don't expect to have to go buy a decent old game like borderlands or gears of war brand new.

Also the only reasons that Microsoft want it online all the time are
A) So they can see what we're doing
B) Stop people doing mods in solo/single player (which are harmless and quite fun sometimes)

C) To get more money as the greedy gits

All they would need to stop people doing mods is a well protected game and over the top server checks (to stop people doing it online if they some how managed to mod the game), they don't need a permanent Internet connection.

I can see many people leaving xbox over this, as I know people who don't have Internet / don't use the Internet, but instead buy games like cod for the campaign. I even know someone who's dashboard is about 3 or 4 years old, proving they don't use the Internet on it.

I am really considering getting the PS4 as it actually sounds far better at the moment.

K dumb ass they're not doing it for any those reasons. They're doing it to prevent pirating. You can't play pirated games online with the xbox 360. So people play offline. They're trying to that here.

You dont really understand a crack. Chances are, people will still be able to easily play pirated games, but out of millions of people who play, you will be the only to get caught because you stole $60 from them which to them is their whole life savings.

Thrift-Shop Honestly, I don't know how likely I'd be to buy an online-only console. I feel that single player is a great aspect of games, and this might ruin the point of single player games.

You can still play

a) They can probably already see what you are doing, if you are online.
b) Mods on single player will probably still be possible, unless everything is saved to the cloud.
c) How does making a console online all the time make them more money? Apart from the no pre-owned games thing which may not even be real, I can't think of a way it would earn them more.

Im not sure if you are trying to defend the new xbox or not, but this is absolutely the worse idea they can possibly make.

I can see console only gamers moving to ps4 after this while others will step up to make a pc so they will not have to buy anything new. I just hate how he is like "Deal with it." Is he so self minded that he cant realize that not everybody is rich enough to have good connection? Or is he just being another one of those "Its about me" a holes that are doing it for the money.

The activation code won't happen. Because Gamestop said it's a compelling device. Gamestop's profit, well most of it, is on second hand games. So they wouldn't say it was a compelling device if it didn't allow second hand games. Or another alternative is to allow gamestop to sell activation codes for games with the game. That would fix things too.

cil Stupid move by microsoft. They're not doing a very good job of advertising their console before it's even been released. The attitude from the exec "Deal with it" was not acceptable and is not very appealing.

I would they advertise it when they haven't even announced it, everything you have read could be just rumors.

Jigee That one comment "Deal with it." Was enough to convince me 'not' to buy this console. It signals to me that they will not listen to any complaints we have and they will take it to wherever they please and leave us, the consumer, out in the rain. I could equate this to a homeless man sitting outside of a nice restaurant waiting for someone to give them scraps. This holier than thou attitude that M$ seems to have adopted has completely turned me off of their next gen system. Although I must thank them; their consistent douche-baggery has been enough to push me to PC gaming.

I'm done with console gaming after my 360 dies I just don't see console gaming going anywhere anymore it gets boring easy and no one plays to have fun anymore pc is deffo the way forward
