Sony fined £250k over 'preventable' PSN hack

4.6
Sony is facing a £250,000 penalty for what is deemed a 'security failure' during the PlayStation Network hack that affected 77 million accounts in April 2011.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) stated that the attack was preventable, and that there was "no disguising that Sony is a business that should have known better".

Sony is now preparing an appeal, in order to reverse the ruling.

"PlayStation Europe notes that the ICO recognises Sony was the victim of 'a focused and determined criminal attack' and that 'there is no evidence that encrypted payment card details were accessed', and that 'personal data is unlikely to have been used for fraudulent purposes'."

Sony chief executive, Kaz Hirai apologized for the security breach one month after the attack brought the entire network down.

250k is nothing to a company like Sony. It probably would have cost them more to prevent the attacks.

-VeteranHacker- 250,000 !?

It's a bit harsh on a multi-BILLION pound company...

It's like me walking up to Bill Gates and saying:
"Hey you!! You owe me a piece of gum and a yo-yo".

Honestly... they won't have any trouble paying this.

It's more of a slap on the wrist than a punishment.

I've owned both consoles and I can honestly say I prefer Xbox over PS3. Not because of my friends being on Xbox but because I haven't ever had any problems with my Xbox while I have with my PS3 (the laser burned out on it).

smarty693 everyone says psn shouldn't of been hacked, look at XBL the amount of JTag consoles out there and all these hacked lobbies and modded games, that's a rarity on the ps3, yea sure they got hacked into, lots of people do, its only because its a big company everybody's intrested. not saying eithers better, used to be a ps3 gamer but had more friends on 360 so i switched, still play ps3 too its just as much fun

This article is not talking about Jtags or jailbroken PS3s. Its talking about how the PSN servers were hacked and peoples info was stolen. Jailbroken PS3s only mapped out the network/servers. Also, the 2010(I believe) winter update patched most Jtags from going online. There were very few people with online Jtags and they were either the founders of the bypass or people that pay hundreds of dollars. The Jailbroken PS3s were only recently patched. In fact, you can probably still find the article here on TTGs news feed that talks about this.
