Super Rare GameCube Games Listed for Sale at Absurd Prices

4
A Nintendo fan stumbled across Ebay listings for rare GameCube game Pokemon Colosseum, priced at over $75,000 in one instance. These listings were posted online through Ebay, with the fan sharing the prices that these resellers were asking for. These figures for the rare Nintendo GameCube game were mocked by those who saw the listings, insisting it wasn't worth what it was put up for.

The GameCube game in particular was a rare variant of Pokemon Colosseum, one of the Pokemon franchise's GameCube-exclusive spin-offs that was developed by Genius Sonority. This game allowed players to capture a variety of Pokemon that weren't available in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, many being those that hailed from the Johto Region like Suicune, Entei, and Raikou, just to name a few. It also had an exclusive bonus disc for pre-orders in North America, where it gave fans a chance to download Jirachi to their GBA games. This variant of the game was spotted online in a listing on Ebay which went for an absurd amount of money.

Posted on the r/GameCube subreddit by MastaTyTy, they showed off two listings of these games, one being already opened and the other factory sealed. The first listing saw that had the opened box showed that it was running for $75,000 USD, while the other listing for the factory sealed copy was going for $145,000 instead. Many users who saw the pictures of the listing mocked how the reseller expected someone to pay what almost amounts to a new car for an older piece of gaming history, with the original poster also noting that they were blown away with the prices for these rare GameCube games.

Along with disparaging the marked up price, MastaTyTy expressed an ongoing issue with retro game prices, the act of price gouging for older games, especially for those that haven't been re-released or trapped on Nintendo's old hardware. Many gamers expressed that the fun of collecting retro gaming has been tainted by sellers or other participants who have been putting up the same game for around the same price and setting a sort of standard.

Scalping and price gouging for video games is still a commonly occurring practice, which only worsened by COVID-19 pandemic. While measures have been taken to prevent scalping, there's still cases of it occurring for both recently released video games and retro hardware. Many gamers usually turn to archival and emulation when it comes to being able to re-experience these old GameCube classics without the need for the old hardware.
