Square Enix has just released a trailer for Octopath Traveler 2 featuring two never-before-seen characters: Partitio the merchant and Osvald the scholar. Mirroring the original eight classes that players could choose from in the original Octopath Traveler, the merchant and the scholar are the first characters to be revealed for the new game, with fans expecting six more on the way.

Octopath Traveler 2 is set in an all-new world with brand-new characters to boot, giving those who never played the first game a chance to jump in. While Square Enix is looking to keep a lot of the same elements from its previous title, namely the HD-2D graphics and unique retro-pixel art style, the company wants to take Octopath 2 to entirely new heights.



From the trailer, viewers can see Partitio as a kind tradesman with a jovial tone, looking to accomplish his goals without making enemies. In combat, Partitio shows signs of a support character. The video shows him casting a spell that increases his fellow party members' health, a key component in any JRPG.

Square Enix has claimed that its characters will have much more interaction with the world and each other than before. Partitio is a great example of this purported change, as the newly released promotional video shows him chatting with NPCs the world over. As a merchant, Partitio has the ability to buy just about anything off of NPCs around the game. The trailer even shows him buying a spear right off of a guard, letting players know a weapon is never too far away.

If Partitio was to be the good, fun character in the video, Osvald is perfect as his foil. The scholar is an ex-inmate, framed for the murder of his wife and daughter and sentenced to life in prison. The game starts after Osvald has been in prison for more than five years, making him well acquainted with the holding facility and his jailors. Because of his gruff backstory, Osvald brings a unique set of skills to Octopath Traveler 2. Where Partitio can barter with the common folk, Osvald can mug them. If that wasn't enough, the scholar can even scrutinize people to get more information from them.



Whether you want to play nice like Partitio and give people money for their wares, or play as Osvald and just take them through force, you can pick up Octopath Traveler 2 when it comes out worldwide on February 24 of next year for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
