Cyberpunk 2077 has cleared 20 million sales, CD Projekt claimed on Wednesday.

The figure is up from 18 million sales reported by the company in April.

The game’s latest sales milestone was reached following a recent resurgence for the open-world RPG, which has had a bumpy lifecycle.

Cyberpunk 2077 was billed as one of the biggest titles of the last console generation, with the heavily anticipated game selling eight million copies via pre-orders alone, according to CD Projekt.

That total rose to 13 million during the game’s launch month in December 2020.

However, despite the blockbuster sales figures, the game was in serious trouble at release.

After three delays, Cyberpunk 2077 arrived for PC and consoles with a host of technical problems, resulting in refunds being offered and the game being pulled from the PlayStation Store.

Over 20 million cyberpunks have been roaming the streets of Night City – partying with Jackie and getting to know Johnny, driving around with Panam and diving with Judy, hanging out with River and listening to Kerry’s songs.

Following six months of patches designed to improve the game, it returned to Sony’s online marketplace in June 2021, when CD Projekt said it believed Cyberpunk 2077‘s performance had reached a “satisfying” level.

In the 15 months since developer CD Projekt Red has continued to deliver title updates designed to improve the experience, and Cyberpunk 2077 was also released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in February.

The game has seen a spike in players following this month’s launch of its 1.6 patch, a half-price discount on Steam, and the release of Netflix’s anime series Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which has received very favourable reviews.

CD Projekt said earlier this month that Cyberpunk 2077 was attracting over one million players daily.

Cyberpunk 2077’s first expansion, Phantom Liberty, was announced in early September. It will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia in 2023.
