CD Projekt ‘fully committed’ to Cyberpunk beyond 2077’s sole expansion

CD Projekt has said it remains “fully committed” to building the Cyberpunk IP following the news that it’s only planning a single expansion for 2077.

Developer CD Projekt Red announced Cyberpunk’s first expansion, Phantom Liberty, on Wednesday.

It later said the DLC, which is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia in 2023, is the only planned expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.

During CD Projekt’s half year earnings call on Wednesday, executives were asked to provide further details on the company’s Cyberpunk 2077 expansion strategy.

“On the question on further expansions for Cyberpunk, we decided to develop one major expansion for Cyberpunk which is going to take advantage of all the capabilities of the new-gen consoles,” said Michał Nowakowski, CD Projekt’s SVP of business development.

“Having said that, we’re fully committed to developing the Cyberpunk IP further, so beyond this particular Cyberpunk expansion. We’ve put a lot of effort and time into building this franchise and we definitely want to continue to build upon what was built right now with new stories, new experiences, new content, not just in a video game format, but I’ll leave it here.

“So, in terms of expansions, there’s going to be just one major expansion, however there’s going be new stuff in the future.”

CD Projekt claimed in April that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 18 million copies since its December 2020 release.

The next-gen version of the game was released in February 2022 and CD Projekt said today that it had achieved “satisfactory sales figures, especially for the console version”.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Edgerunners update, which was released on Wednesday, will be the last major patch for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

CD Projekt said it had made the “difficult decision” to not develop Phantom Liberty for PS4 and Xbox One “as the scope for the expansion makes releasing it for previous-gen consoles technologically challenging without compromising player experience”.

Away from games, CD Projekt Red has been working since 2018 as a producer on the anime series Cyberpunk Edgerunners. The Netflix show, which is animated by Studio Trigger, premieres on September 13.

During Wednesday’s earnings call, CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński said the updated version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is “on track” to be released for new-gen consoles and PC later this year.

And he said the company expects its new Witcher saga, which was announced in March, to consist of “more than one game”.
