Epic Games Store Update Improves Achievements

The Epic Games Store has come a long way since it was first released in 2018. Development has been slow, as Epic Games rolls out features at a pace few are content with, but the Epic Games Store of today is much more robust compared to the original release. One of the key features that Epic Games has added is an Achievement system, something game players highly value. And now, more than half a year later, Epic Games is expanding the EGS Achievement system with even more functionality.

Initially released in late 2021, the Achievement system for the Epic Games Store was very bare bones. It allowed game developers to implement achievements for their games and for players to earn those achievements, permanently unlocking them so they might be perused later in a user's profile. There were even associated trophies and XP values associated with each achievement. The system didn't have ways to filter achievements, however, nor did it have a way to check the rarity of various achievements.

That functionality has now been added to the Epic Games Store. EGS users are now able to see just how rare achievements are. Each achievement will have a small label beneath it showing the percentage of players that have unlocked it. Within their account information, Epic Games Store users can also sort their unlocked achievements so that they can see what their rarest and most common achievements are.

While these additions to the EGS Achievement system aren't particularly robust, it just goes to show that the Epic Games development team is continuing to iterate on the storefront's functionality. These aren't major features, but they are features that users enjoy on other platforms. It only makes sense for the features to be implemented on the Epic Games Store, too.

To see these small features added to the Epic Games Store is somewhat surprising. Epic Games has a long list of major features left to be added to the storefront, after all. Achievement percentage would have to be low on the priority list. As such, it likely was a relatively quick feature for Epic Games developers to add that didn't slow down work on other upcoming features.

As for what users can expect to see next, the Epic Games Store's development Trello has several exciting upcoming additions. A Favorites feature for players to mark their top games in their Library is being worked on, as are more robust publishing tools for game developers and publishers. Another major upcoming addition to the Epic Games Store is Profiles, a social panel showing off a user's achievements, friends, and other publicly shared information. Expect the Epic Games Store to continue to grow in the months and years to come.
