The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s release date has been revealed.
The upcoming stealth game based on the Lord of the Rings franchise will release on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC on September 1, 2022.
A Nintendo Switch version is planned for later this year, although a specific time frame wasn’t revealed.
Billed as a story-driven action-adventure game, Gollum was first announced in March 2019, when Daedalic said it would “remain true to the vision laid out in J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and will also explore new events and details related to Gollum’s journey.”
According to the game’s Steam listing, players will embark on a perilous journey as Gollum searches for the One Ring.
It will detail less well-known aspects of Gollum’s story, “from his time as a slave below the Dark Tower to his stay with the Elves of Mirkwood.”
The product description adds: “The decisions you make and the way you play have a direct influence on Gollum’s personality: Always struggling between the two sides embodied by Gollum and Sméagol, it is up to you to decide whether the darker side of Gollum takes over or if there is a spark of reason left in what once was Sméagol. One mind, two egos – you decide!”
The first screenshots of the game, which is powered by Unreal Engine, were published in May 2020. At the time it was described as a “sneaking game”, with a typical scene seeing Gollum creeping past orc guards and hiding under train carriages.
