150 player battle royale game Off The Grid announced

Gunzilla Games have teamed up with movie director Neill Blomkamp to create the “next generation” of battle royale games, Off The Grid. The game has been written by Richard K. Morgan, who previously worked on Crysis and you may be wondering why a battle royale needs a writer. Here’s Blomkamp explaining the game:

With OTG, our ambition is not only to create the Battle Royale 2.0 by adding deep player progression, but to build an evolving world designed to take on a life of its own, changing in unexpected ways each time a player rejoins the game. With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon.

Set within a dystopian future, the the third person “cyberpunk styled” shooter will feature 150 players fighting against each other as well as AI enemies in the environment.

“Players have the freedom to control how the hard-boiled story unfolds, with each decision made directly impacting everyone’s gameplay,” say Gunzilla Games. “Core to the experience and deep narrative structure is the unique way in which players can craft, customize, and trade their in-game items with each other. In OTG, the lines between hero and villain become blurred as players fight to survive the covert corporate battles of the future.”

The teaser trailer shows us very little but it does seem there will be jungle environments alongside large cities. Blomkamp revealed he was working on a game back in July 2021 and explained to IGN how it differs from making a film.

“The difference [from directing a film] is not acting like a single point that guides the creative team. It’s making sure that you’re integrated into the team in a real way. I can come in with a very definitive point of view, but it has to work on two levels. It has to be accepted by the greater team as the right creative direction to go in. And it also has to be, first and foremost, something that can integrate into the architecture of gameplay in a way that’s beneficial to the game.”

Off the Grid is due for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2023.
