Sony Will Reportedly Reveal Project Spartacus As Early As Next Week

Sony will reportedly reveal its subscription service, codenamed Project Spartacus, as early as next week.

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier is reporting that people familiar with PlayStation's plans have revealed that the company is planning to finally reveal its subscription service, and it could be coming as early as next week.

Project Spartacus is PlayStation's answer to Xbox Game Pass and has been reported several times over the past few years. Sony will reportedly debut it alongside some of its biggest games from the past few years.

According to the report, the service will combine PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus into one. Those who subscribe will then reportedly be able to choose multiple tiers of spending, each one offering a bigger catalogue of both modern games and older PlayStation classics, presumably from consoles ranging from the PS1 to the PS3.

IGN reported the tier system in a bit more detail, saying, "a third, most expensive tier, will include PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games into this library", indicating that backwards compatibility is only available in the higher tier.

Bloomberg also reports that it managed to obtain documents last year that indicated that higher tiers will give players access to extended game demos and give them the ability to stream over the internet. It's not clear if this is still the case considering the documents were found last year, but a Sony spokesperson refused to comment on the matter so we'll have to wait for the presentation.

Although Sony finally introducing some sort of Xbox Game Pass competitor is good news for fans of the console, it seems like it won't quite have the same lineup. According to Bloomberg, those familiar with Project Spartacus claim that the service won't have some of Sony's biggest exclusives at launch.

For example, Bloomberg suggests that big releases like God of War: Ragnarok won't be available with Project Spartacus from day one, unlike Xbox which has all of its biggest releases available for download from the get go.
