The bug, which publisher Bandai Namco says allowed “players to teleport others to incorrect map coordinates”, essentially meant that players in PvP could make their enemy spawn in an area of the map that the game deemed unstable, causing the player to fall to their death.
However, the bug would also stop the game respawning the player in a safe area, causing an infinite loop from which players couldn’t escape, thus ruining their save. While there is fast travel in Elden Ring, players can’t access it while falling, so even going offline to break the multiplayer connection wouldn’t solve the issue.

This is the second patch for Elden Ring in a week, with the first adding a feature that let players record an icon and the name of an NPC on the game’s map once you encounter them.
Before the update, the game made no visible record of the NPCs a player met, leading some to complain that it was hard to keep track of everyone.
One player even created an iOS app designed to let players manually take note of each NPC they meet.
