Sony buying Bungie for $3.6bn

Sony has today announced it will buy Destiny maker Bungie for $3.6bn.

The Destiny franchise will remain multiplatform, according to a GamesIndustry.biz report.

Following the deal's completion, Bungie will remain a multiplatform studio which can "self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play".

"We've had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn't be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family," said Sony boss Jim Ryan.

"This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience. We understand how vital Bungie's community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow. Like Bungie, our community is core to PlayStation's DNA, and our shared passion for the gamer and building the best place to play will now evolve even further."

In a blog post on the buyout, Bungie said the deal would not impact the creative plan for Destiny through the end of its current saga (due in 2024), and that upcoming expansion The Witch Queen would not contain any platform exclusives. Destiny 2 features such as cross-save, cross-play and companion apps will also be unaffected.

Beyond Destiny 2, Bungie had this to say on whether future games will become PlayStation exclusives: "No. We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games. We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community."

Today's announcement comes hot on the heels of Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard for an eye-watering $69bn.

GT-R Honestly, they wasted their money buying a company past its prime.

Destiny 2 is a money printing, live-service game that averages 700,000 players daily. It's one of the top played games globally and has been for years.

Past it's prime? Sorry but you're living in the past.

Yes, past it's prime just as I said. They didn't make D2 f2p out of sheer generosity.

honestly used to be a huge destiny fan and i dont think the game is what it used to be tbh.

What utter BS "live-service game that averages 700,000 players daily" It barely averages 60k, highest it was ever was 290k when it was announced as free to play and now stays at 50k a day + xbox and PS bring in 82k together. making it 140k at most if not closer to 100k

We are very clearly talking about different quantitative values. It appears you're talking about *concurrent* users, aka the number that are online as of this moment. For example, at time of this reply there are 60.5k playing on Steam.

The "700,000 players daily" I referred to is the number of unique users that play the game on a daily basis. This number is much more valuable in recognizing popularity over time. When you measure how popular a movie was at the box office, you don't look at it and say "well only 150k people bought a ticket at 7pm" - you instead look at the total number of ticket sales.

I know Sony is lacking in the FPS multiplayer library so this is a good thing, but this just feels more like Sony trying to get back at MS
