PlayStation’s Ghost of Tsushima has sold through 8 million copies, developer Sucker Punch has announced.
This represents an increase of 1.5 million copies since the game’s last sales update, which was provided in March last year.
The bulk of these sales are likely attributed to the Director’s Cut, which was released for PS5 and PS4 last summer with graphical improvements and additional content.
The sales milestone means Ghost of Tsushima stands among PlayStation’s most successful original game releases, including Horizon Zero Dawn (10m) and God of War 2018 (20m).
At the time of its release in July 2020, Ghost of Tsushima had become PlayStation’s fastest-selling original IP to date.
The Sucker Punch title sold through more than 2.4 million copies globally in its first three days of sales, beating the record previously held by 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, which took two weeks to sell through 2.6m units.
However, Tsushima was some ways from matching the records set by established franchises such as The Last of Us Part 2, which sold over four million copies in three days. God of War and Spider-Man each sold more than three million copies in the same timespan.
The director of the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie recently said that he wants to “do it right”.
While the filmmaker conceded that the crew are still in the early stages of production, and have yet to finalise a script, he assured fans of the series that players: “Would be very happy with what we’re working on.”
