Call of Duty Vanguard reveals its PS5 DualSense features

Sledgehammer Games has revealed details of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s DualSense controller features and a fresh pair of multiplayer Operators.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sledgehammer principal engineer Chris Fowler said the game attempts to use the PS5 controller’s adaptive triggers to simulate the trigger weight of real-world weapons.

Firing each gun in the WWII shooter requires the player to apply a different level of pressure to the controller’s trigger. The same applies to the L2 trigger, which brings up the weapon’s scope, and Fowler said gun attachments will impact controller feedback too, although all of these features can be turned off in the game’s settings.

“The ability to do this with the DualSense controller has not only allowed us to add a new degree of tactical decision-making for players when building their perfect loadouts, but helps to increase the sense of immersion in the overall experience,” he claimed.

Fowler also explained how the game makes use of DualSense’s haptic feedback capabilities.

“So when enemy fire is tearing through your cover, you will feel the impacts of the bursts and debris around you,” he said.

“Or when the Luftwaffe rains down it’s fury as you’re sprinting for your life in Stalingrad, you will feel the thud of the heavy explosions, adding to the chaos of the moment.”

In a separate PS Blog post, Sledgehammer offered new details on four of the game’s Operators.

They include two of the game’s previously revealed lead characters, Arthur Kingsley and Polina Petrova, who are playable in the single-player campaign and multiplayer, plus the first information on multiplayer-only characters Daniel Take Yatsu and Padmavati Balan.

The new details were accompanied by the bio videos for the four characters featured on this page.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is scheduled for release on November 5, 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC via Battle.net.

A pair of Vanguard’s writers said this month that they want to help create two sequels to the game. Discussing the shooter during a New York Comic Con panel, Sledgehammer contractor Sam Maggs said she hopes Vanguard’s characters can become new mascots for the blockbuster franchise over multiple series entries.
