According to Xbox Wire, the Game of the Year Edition of the flight sim will be a free update for anyone who currently owns the game through retail or on Xbox Game Pass. The post makes sure to point out that the update will be available for PC players as well as those experiencing Microsoft Flight Simulator on consoles following its July 2021 console release.
The update is serving as a thank you to Asobo Studio's fans who "made Microsoft Flight Simulator such a phenomenon," according to the post. The update will include five new aircrafts, eight new airports spread across the United States, Germany, and Switzerland, new missions, new tutorials, and new photogrammetry cities. Additionally, the game will support DX12 for PC players as well as an updated weather system and a dev mode replay system.
Thank you all for a fantastic past year of #MicrosoftFlightSimulator. ✈️— Microsoft Flight Simulator (@MSFSofficial) October 19, 2021
On November 18th, the Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition will be available as a free update for existing users on PC and Xbox Series X|S.https://t.co/VKNaMXG1o0
Notably, Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition will not include the Reno Air Races expansion that was announced earlier this year, despite the DLC launching on the same day as the new edition. Fans looking to race against friends online will need to separately purchase the DLC which includes the Reno Air Races game modes and a wide variety of colors and decals for the in-game planes.
It's also important to note that the Top Gun: Maverick DLC was delayed in September from its November 19 initial release date to May 27, 2022, to line up with the delayed release of the film. While fans are itching to get inside the cockpits of the planes from the classic Tom Cruise film and its sequel, it seems like the tie-in is required to release in a similar window as the film and won't be appearing with the Game of the Year Edition of Flight Simulator.
Microsoft Flight Simulator was finally made available on consoles earlier this year which saw plenty of new fans taking to the skies and exploring otherwise inaccessible parts of the world. The game is on Xbox Game Pass for PC and console and, aside from the upcoming Game of the Year Edition, has received constant updates and support.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
