Speaking as part of a candid interview with GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said that the business is defined by three key attributes: games, community, and the brand. According to the bigwig, Sony’s gaming division has always been “cool”, and when prompted to describe what makes the PlayStation 5 so desirable, he returned to the most important attribute of all: the exclusives.

“The launch lineup was the best we’ve ever had, and I’d submit the best that any console platform has ever had,” he beamed. “The work we’ve done since then [is excellent], with Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – and MLB The Show 21 for the United States, which is a fine game. The pipeline of games that we have coming is just fantastic – it’s by far the strongest that we’ve ever had for any of our consoles. I can’t wait to see these games starting to drop: Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, and Gran Turismo 7.”

Despite its somewhat secretive nature at times this year, we know the company has more than 25 exclusives in development for the PS5 – as well as a brand new virtual reality headset to boot. Sony’s first-party output has gone from strength-to-strength over the past decade, and with the leadership of PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst, the sheer number of studios working under the brand’s umbrella is unprecedented right now. It’s going to be a fun generation, folks.
