Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remakes are Getting a VR Mod

Though typically restricted to television and computer screens, the Resident Evil series has a long history of terrifying its audience. Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake both revitalized the horror of these 1990s titles, and now one fan is working on making them even scarier by making them playable in virtual reality.

Resident Evil isn't a stranger to the realm of virtual reality, as Resident Evil 7 was made available in VR via the PSVR. However, thus far, Resident Evil Village hasn't followed suit, and neither of the remakes were given the virtual reality treatment. Thankfully, fans can take matters into their own hands, and series enthusiasts seem eager to try it out.

A Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake mod by praydog is in progress that will allow players to put on a virtual reality headset and survive the horror in first person. A demonstration video showing some brief gameplay from Resident Evil 3 Remake in VR has been uploaded, though an exact release date on the mod is currently unknown.

The mod appears impressive, as the player appears to wander through dark hallways as Claire Redfield. The player is able to adjusts her hands individually, letting them hold up and direct their flashlight with their left hand, and wield the pistol with their right. Although the player model's arm occasionally develops a stretchy, noodle-like look in the video, a note from the uploader indicates that this issue has since been amended by implementing full VRIK.

While fans were able to flee the terrifying Baker family in virtual reality, there's been no confirmation that players will be able to crane their necks staring up at the immensely tall Lady Dimitrescu of Resident Evil Village. It is possible that such a development may still be in the works, however, as the PS5 is still set to see its own version of PSVR to be released in the future. Developing a VR experience with the older hardware may simply have not been possible.

While the future of an official VR Resident Evil 2, 3, or Village is unclear, Resident Evil 4 is an outlier. Capcom and Oculus came together to reveal that Resident Evil 4 is coming to Oculus Quest 2 standalone virtual reality headsets. While there haven't been any major reveals on the project since, once released, it should provide players with a unique take on a game that has already been ported to most modern consoles. Whether dealing with Ganado, Tyrants, or normal zombies in virtual reality, Resident Evil fans with VR headsets have a lot to look forward to.
