Is Sony making its own Kinect?

4.8
A recent patent filing suggests that Sony is working on Kinect-like tech, possibly for use with future PlayStation software.

As PlayStation Lifestyle reports, a patent was filed back in October 2011 for “real-time three-dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device”.

The device also “includes obtaining depth values indicating distances from one or more physical objects in a physical scene to a depth sensing device.”

Patents don’t always come to fruition, of course, but this could be something to bear in mind when dreaming up those PS4 theories.

Well that's interesting but considering the Kinect is already out, they need to make sure their version is twice as good and has none of the same problems the Kinect has...

The answer is yes.

They didn't expect MS to sell so many Kinects and now they want a piece of that very juicy depth sensing pie.

bmadden They'd better not.
They can stick to their Move.

I was gonna say... didn't everyone copy Nintendo already?

Nintendo had the WII, Microsoft had the Kinect, and Sony had Move.

This is true, but Sony did kick this off originally with the EyeToy many years back.

Yeah, it was pretty cool but they shouldve stayed with it
