Phil Spencer - The Elder Scrolls 6 Won't Release Until after Fable

3.5
Fans have been waiting a long time for The Elder Scrolls 6 to finally grace their PCs and consoles. Bethesda officially announced the next installment of its acclaimed action RPG franchise during E3 2018. However, there has been little information released since.

Recently though, fans gained insight into when the Elder Scrolls 6 might finally make its debut. During an appearance on IGN’s Unlocked podcast, Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed fans wouldn’t be seeing a new Elder Scrolls until sometime after Playground Game’s releases the next Fable.

Spencer went on the podcast to talk about Xbox’s twentieth anniversary. During the hour-long interview, Phil and the hosts discussed the past, present, and future of Xbox. Eventually, this brought the discussion to Fable, The Elder Scrolls 6, and Obsidian’s Avowed. Some have touted the latter as a potential “Skyrim killer,” and one of the hosts asked if Spencer considered it Microsoft’s answer to the Elder Scrolls. The Xbox head denied this, explaining that Avowed, Elder Scrolls, and Fable will remain very distinct from each other. He also noted that TES 6 wouldn’t be released until a while after Fable and Avowed are out the door.

Fable doesn’t have a confirmed release date, either. Also, like The Elder Scrolls 6, little is known about Playground Game’s upcoming action RPG. It’s not even clear if it’s a sequel, prequel, or reboot of Lionhead’s Fable series. However, industry insider and VentureBeat contributor Jeff Grubb expects Fable to launch in 2023, alongside Avowed, Perfect Dark, and Hellblade 2. If his information is accurate, it suggests fans likely won’t see The Elder Scrolls 6 until 2024 at the earliest. A 2025 or 2026 release date may also be likely. Fifteen years may seem like a long time between games, not counting DLC and spin-offs like TES Online and The Elder Scrolls: Blades. However, it makes sense given Bethesda’s focus on developing its new IP, Starfield.

Despite its 2018 announcement, fans have been left in the dark on the game, with the only information on the new Elder Scrolls being that it is still in the design phase. Fans have long speculated that the next Elder Scrolls might take place in Hammerfell, a desert country west of Skyrim. The region has not been featured in the main series since Daggerfall in 1996. Some fans mistakenly took Bethesda’s trademark of Redfall as further evidence. However, Bethesda later revealed it to be an unrelated title in development at Arkane Studios.

Spencer was also quite evasive during the interview when asked if The Elder Scrolls 6 would be an Xbox exclusive. Either way, it appears that Elder Scrolls fans will still have a while to wait. Hopefully, though, Fable and Avowed will help keep Xbox and PC players busy until The Elder Scrolls 6 finally makes an appearance.

The Elder Scrolls 6 is in development.
