A Patch Costs $40,000 on Xbox 360 and PS3

4.5
Double Fine’s Tim Schafer has been rather chatty lately. In case you haven’t heard, Schafer and his team over at Double Fine took to Kickstarter to raise money for an old-school point and click adventure game. In the last five days, fans have pledged over $1,750,000 for the project. Learn more about Double Fine Adventure.

In an interview with Hookshot, Schafer shed some light on how much it costs to release a patch on Xbox 360 and PS3 (he was referring to modern consoles). Schafer explained, “those systems as great as they are, they’re still closed. You have to jump through a lot of hoops, even for important stuff like patching and supporting your game. Those are things we really want to do, but we can’t do it on these systems. I mean, it costs $40,000 to put up a patch – we can’t afford that! Open systems like Steam, that allow us to set our own prices, that’s where it’s at, and doing it completely alone like Minecraft. That’s where people are going.”

finish you post... mean while in africa what?

I think that was his post finished...What he means is Menawhile in Africa children are starving and have no water while here spending 40,000 on a patch
Meanwhile.... In Africa.

Yeah they are starving but who really cares? I know the people that made both of these posts haven't donated any money or adopted any kids!

They are starving because Africa is full of tribes and rebles who don't wan't to conform to a new way of living, they wan't to have civil wars and shoot at eachother with AK-47's. They need to organize, stop the endless violence and maybe they wouldent be in such a bad predicament!

Actually I have donated money to charity, but ye u are right I do care but not enough to do anything about it but it is not there fault they are fighting because they are fighting for food...

theartftw Old news, why do you think things take so long to be patched? Why do you think DLC comes in groups/lumped together? They try to stuff as much in one patch as they can so they don't have to pay for more. Title updates/patches never come without DLC unless it's urgent which is why Call Of Duty has recently started doing hotpatches or hotfixes, which I assume doesn't cost them since it's all on their end.

Yes, they actually used their brains and added in Hotfixes.
As for the Price, yes its expensive. but it makes sense, and that's how they make their money. The gaming Industry is bigger than the Movie industry, so isn't much of a surprise

I now see why games try not to get patches out. but as for CoD, they make more than enough money from the game to spend money on a patch, but as for other Games, most cant afford a patch like Tim Schafer was explaining...
