Halo Infinite Confirms Controversial Fortnite Feature

3.6
343 Industries has confirmed a controversial multiplayer feature is present in Halo Infinite. The past couple of years, one of the biggest talking points in games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and more has been skill-based matchmaking, also known as SBMM. SBMM has been around for a long time, but in recent years it's come under the microscope and been the target of criticism as it's evolved and become more and more crucial to the experience of games it's implemented in. And as you would expect, it's in Halo Infinite.

For those that don't know: Skill-based matchmaking is a matchmaking system that more often or not is implemented in two ways. The first and more prominent way is also the more controversial way, and that's filling a lobby full of evenly skilled players. The second implementation is usually in team-based multiplayer, and it creates two balanced teams by averaging out skill across each respective team.

For now, it remains to be seen how Halo Infinite will make use of SBMM and how aggressive 343 Industries will be with the toolset, but as you would expect, it's divided fans.

"With new training options, bots to spar against, skill-based-matchmaking, and improved systems that deliver better communication of key info to players during a match, we’re excited to welcome Spartans of all skill levels and help you battle your way to the top each season," said 343 Industries.

Currently, Halo Infinite is still scheduled to release this holiday season. Based on what I've heard, a final date hasn't been determined yet, but the game should make this window. If this is the case, we should see and hear a lot more about the game soon, which means we should hear more about SBMM in the coming months.

Halo Infinite is slated to release this holiday season via the Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass.

I'm all for SBMM but it has to be weak to nonexistent. I understand that people are afraid of getting stomped by the vets but that's a hump you have to get over. I didn't complain when picked gears of war 5 back up after taking almost a decade break from the franchise. I got stomped game after game and after 2-3 weeks i got my footing and i can carry for the most part.

I can understand that some people don't have 8-10 hours to practice a game and have responsibilities but lets be honest, most halo players will tell you they've been playing since halo 3. Same with gears of war players. There aren't many new halo players so i can at least understand that.

I'll give it a full fledged try but if i start getting 3-5 min queues for public matches that's when the game gets put down. I'm not pulling another apex legends.

Yin Makes sense. I have to assume nearly all games are going this route. It gives the newer players a chance to get their footing and learn the game before entering lobbies that are just obliterating them. Honestly, I am more concerned about potential hackers at this point.

A new feature a lot of games have, and Halo Infinite will also have is a shooting range of sorts where you can shoot bots and get a feel for weapons. Super good for new players and people that need a refreshment on the halo sandbox. Cheaters is a totally different problem, especially since multiply is free to play. MCC already has a cheater problem, hopefully infinites brand new engine mixed with a hopefully good anti cheat is enough to sway things for a while but it seems like cheaters just always win.

OGTrey079 Why not just add ranked play..

There will be ranked play, and there will still be SBMM in social as well.

grizzlydean Not really to much of a concern if they do a custom games browser or social games still

CGB and Social is much different, clearly it won't have any SBMM if there is a CGB but social will still have it.

It already ruins MCC, I'm hoping with a big enough player base it won't ruin infinite too.
