Megaupload data could be deleted starting Thursday

4.4
If you have any important files that were hosted via the Megaupload file sharing service, you could have those files deleted in just a few days. The Associated Press (via NPR.com) reports that the companies that hosted the servers for Megaupload could start getting rid of those files beginning on Thursday.

The story reports that the U.S. Attorney's Office sent a letter on Friday to Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications Group, which owns the servers that hosted the Megaupload service. The letter said those companies could start deleting data that used the service on Thursday. Megaupload was shut down earlier this month by US officials and several of its employees, including its founder Kim Dotcom, were arrested on online piracy charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office's letter also said that the government has made copies of some of the data found on Megaupload's servers. However, none of the servers were physically taken from their hosting locations.

Megaupload's attorney Ira Rothken says that he is trying to keep that data from being deleted from the servers. Not only could 50 million Megaupload users be affected, but Rothken says that those files could be helpful in Megaupload's defense against the online piracy charges. He added, "We're cautiously optimistic at this point that because the United States, as well as Megaupload, should have a common desire to protect consumers, that this type of agreement will get done."

TTGxUehleinbx Maybe we should focus on the troops that are dying for this country in a pointless war instead?

Nah, lets put us into more debt and waste time!!!! U.S. Goverment ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
you mean the troops that are getting pulled out? And wtf lol how does shutting down MU bring us (U.S Economy) into more debt? You're trying too hard.

DrPhil321 If anyone is surprised this is happening, you're an idiot. It's so obvious this was going to happen Mega was one the (if not the) notorious hosts for pirated content. It was only a matter of time.

This is money talking. More specifically the record companies' money, not the artists'.

Especially if you see how early they're trying to get the data to be deleted, rather than wait until there is an actual verdict.

I love how they said they've taken copies of some of the content. Meaning they've downloaded it. Downloading copyrighted work = illegal, or does that just apply to normal people?

The reason they want this stuff deleted so fast is because, as their lawyer said, it will prove that MegaUpload is in no way a website solely used for piracy. Not even mainly used for that. And let's face it, if you take down one site, everyone will start using another one.

It's like DNS blocking a website due to piracy, it proves that the people who come up with this stuff know nothing about the internet.
