Xbox 720 Will Be Six Times as Powerful as Current Gen

4.8
The next Xbox will ship to retailers in late October or early November of next year with six times the processing power of the Xbox 360, sources close to the project have told IGN. Following initial reports from tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system's GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD's 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.

In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.

Developers are likely to receive development kits based on the system's final configuration in August. Projected pricing for the console was not provided.

Thanks to IGN for the quick write up!

i_r_illiterate i like how all the kids are acting like its going to be the most expensive thing ever :D
It will be about 400.00 and like $600.00 is my estimate :)

It will be the same price as the current XBOX.
No It wont it will probably start off at like $500 and maybe go higher

This is microsoft, there buying power is imense they will be buy the processors by the millions! This ALWAYS leads to a reduced offer per unit so it'll be about 20 per unit. We'll be charged about 40 for the processor alone. Plus everything else including outer casing, all the electronics and stuff (which will be made and assembled in china using dirt cheap materials) I reckon it'll come to about 150-200

I bet the 720 is gonna cost around $400.

I'm sorry but TTG is almost late on every topic they post in the news. I saw this article yesterday. Sometimes these things don't get posted until about almost a week later.

If you think this graphics card sucks the next Wii is suppose to have the same graphics as the first one.

cwc123 That's pretty disappointing. My PC has TWO GTX 460s, and just one 460 is roughly equivalent to a Radeon 6850-6870.

You could actually build a rig with better specs than this console right now for under $500....

Thats funny...they might be talking about Xbox, but they're infact mentioning the Radeon HD 6670, which is indeed a computer part.
Really? i don't know about all this tech **** lol, but why the hell don't they just make a high powered pc strictly for gaming? i mean the whole reason i dont play games on pc is it seems complicated, even though im aware its not

Well, you could build it in theory, but obviously it wouldn't be high end. But you could play games on settings around the same as the console. Also, the console's actual CPU would likely be better, but games don't use more than 4 CPU cores anyway at the moment.

And they don't just release a PC because it has too much freedom. That's why. They want you to buy stuff from their overpriced marketplace, and pay $60 a year for Live. On PC, you aren't bound to a single service. If you don't like MS, you can use Valve's Steam or EA's Origin.
This is an Xbox, not a computer.
