PS3 update 4.88 is now available for download and it brings some useful fixes.
Later last year, Sony officially launched a new pair of PlayStation consoles to kick-off another generation of gaming with PS5. When it comes to the financial terms, PlayStation 5 has had record-breaking sales compared to PS4 in a similar period. However, it’s yet to be seen how the sales data will change in the next couple of years.
Despite launching new consoles, Sony still supports its older devices software-wise. Today, the company rolled out a brand new update for PlayStation 3 that might sound a little bit odd, but it turned that the update contains pretty useful changes.
PS3 UPDATE 4.88 PATCH NOTES
Although the official patch notes of the PS3 update 4.88 only mentions “overall system improvements” as the patch details, but the RPCS3 account on Twitter shares more information about the update:
Update Blu-Ray keys for new movie releases
System fixes (possibly security fixes)
While fixing bugs is almost a part of every firmware update for PlayStation consoles, the improved Blu-Ray keys could be pretty useful for those who still have their PS3 consoles and try to use them as a DVD or Blu-Ray player.
Although Sony will never launch a new title on PS3, the company will continue to support this console in the case of software issues. Sony stopped supporting PS2 consoles during the lifetime of PS4. So, the PS3 support could reach an end in the next couple of years if it requires more resources than expected for Sony.
PlayStation 3 was originally launched back in 2006. Some of the most popular Sony Interactive Entertainment franchises like The Last of Us and Uncharted were born during the lifetime of PlayStation 3.
