3 Worst Character Deaths of 2011

4.4
On an average bases video games come complete with multiple different modes a player find themselves buried in for hours. One of the most compelling points in any game is story missions. The missions and characters are a striking point which can make a player fall in love with a game. Characters are what make a game interesting; they grab the player’s attention and pull them through their hardship and prosperity. In most cases these characters become a player’s idol, they are their heroes and in some ways an inspiration. 2011 housed a great year in gaming where many popular titles were released. These sought after titles held characters that were near and dear to players around the world. Some of these games excelled in story mode with unforgettable characters while others forgot their roots; the characters who made
them famous. Below you will find a list of the three worst character deaths of 2011.

gears of war 3

3. Dom Santiago- Gears of War 3

Gears of War became a world renowned title for Xbox 360 players in 2006. The game was unique in so many different ways. Each of the characters in this game was different; they were mysterious, and all of their attitudes offset each other to the finest degree. One of the favored characters was protagonist Marcus Fenix’s best friend, Dom Santiago.

Dom was Marcus’s right hand man. He was comforting and determined to find his family. By the end of Gears of War 2 Dom was heartbroken from the demise of his wife and his attitude seemed to have changed forever. Although he wore a different
attitude since we met him back on the first Gears of War he still attempted to be same hero at the release of 2011’s Gears of War 3.

In the latest Gears title the slogan, “Brother’s till the end”, became clear as Dom committed suicide after viewing his wife’s grave and he and his team got caught up in an almost inescapable position. Dom’s suicide was what helped his friends survive
but it was still heartbreaking to see the character go. In all honesty, Dom was a changed man but players were still saddened by his death. Dying for his friends may have been the ‘right’ thing for him to do; however, having a character that players got to know for such a long time die was a painful, tear-jerking moment.

modern warfare 3

2. Soap- Modern Warfare 3

Modern Warfare became the world’s craze with the release of Call of Duty 4 in 2007. In this game the player takes the role of Soap MacTavish from a first person perspective. The players in ways become Soap. They experience his hardships first hand as if they were the character. You see what Soap has endured you know just as well as he does.

After growing attached to MacTavish in the first Modern Warfare release, the player next gets to know Soap a little more personally in Modern Warfare 2. Soap now as he
walks along side of you. He now has a look, a face and a true personality. Soap is your true friend, he is your battle partner and someone anyone could look up to. By the end of Modern Warfare 2, Soap pulls a knife straight out of himself to kill his foe. He is seemingly unstoppable.

Modern Warfare 3 kicks off with some familiar faces, Soap being one of them. He is then patched upfrom his knife wound and ready to fight. Being by one of your favorite heroes being along side of him again is comforting, fun and exciting. After an explosion from atop a high building, Soap tackles your character out of a window until you both hit the floor. Your character is up within seconds while Soap winds up wounded and heavily bleeding. Players were most likely under the impression Soap was going to make it but they couldn’t have been more wrong. Soap bleed out by the end of that level leaving players shocked and disappointed. How could a man who endured as much as Soap MacTravish go down the way he did. I am shocked beyond belief that that man is no longer with us.

saints row 3

1. Johnny Gat- Saints Row: The Third

Johnny Gat was just one of the characters that were hard not to love. In all of the Saints Row releases he was nothing short of the baddest mother F*cker around. He was as though as a tank and wittier than anybody you have ever met. He made players
love his perfectly placed one liner’s and his out of this world way of survival. Johnny Gat was one of the mostbeloved players I have ever come across. He brought a true sense of gangster, street knowledge to Saints Row.

After getting to know and love this character like no other; Saints Row: The Third starts off the game by killing him off in an airplane while you and female accomplish, Shaundi, survive. Apparently Johnny Gat is want made the game cool because unlike the other Saints Row titles; Saints Row: The Third was geared around whatever is funny instead of the perfect mix of hilarious yet outlandishly true gangster behavior. Even though it was stated in the game that Johnny Gat is dead; I cannot believe the statement. His death left diehard fans in an outrage. Think of Johnny Gat being dead is a thought that would never cross a true Saints Row fans imagination.

On a side note… on the radio after Johnny’s death the news reporter states that there are no remains of a plane (he supposedly died) found. This is significant because Johnny told your player in the plane that he would fly the falling plane back to the Saints territory of Stillwater and to not worry about him; get yourself and Shaundi to safety. So did Johnny Gat really die or is he really alive?

The year of 2011 was a year of wonderful releases with a lot of traumatic deaths. With the death of these loved characters it’s a wonder where the series will turn next. Gears of War 3 was supposed to be ‘the end’ anyway so maybe players will be graced by Dom’s presence in a prequel. But what is Modern Warfare without Soap. And how will a next installment to the Saints Row series look without the cool attitude of beloved Johnny Gat? All that can be said about the death of these three great heroes is they were much loved and will be missed greatly; hopefully somehow in some way they might return.

I think it should have been ghost instead of soap.
Ghost was so much better in MW2!

I think Gears 3 Dom's death was #1. My opinion.
