Call of Duty: Warzone has attracted over 100 million players, Activision Blizzard claimed on Tuesday.
The milestone player count was revealed in a tweet from the official Call of Duty account.
It continues a strong first 13 months for the game, which attracted six million players in 24 hours, 15 million players in three days, 30 million players in 10 days, 50 million players in one month, and 85 million players in nine months.
Warzone celebrated its first anniversary on March 10, 2021.
EA studio Respawn claimed last week that its rival free-to-play battle royale shooter, Apex Legends, had reached the 100 million player milestone some two years after its February 2019 release.
Developer Raven Software recently confirmed a special in-game Warzone event which will mark the arrival of Season 3 and a major map revamp.
Operation Rapid Sunder is set to begin at 12pm PT / 8pm BST this Wednesday, April 21. “Verdansk is about to heat up in a big way,” Raven said, alongside a graphic confirming a Warzone map update.
As first reported by VGC in February, at the end of Black Ops Cold War and Warzone Season 2, the battle royale game will finally transition to its new map.
It’s likely that nuclear warheads recently uncovered on Warzone’s map will be used to trigger the revamp, similar to how Fortnite used an in-game event to transition to Chapter 2.
Footage of the new map was recently revealed in a leaked live-action advert for Warzone Season 3, which appeared to confirm that the updated battleground will be an evolution of Verdansk, rather than an entirely fresh design.
It shows Cold War-era landmarks replacing Verdansk’s own points of interest, including an in-construction Stadium and an aqueduct replacing the Dam. Airport, TV Station and Downtown can also be spotted with a 1980s makeover.
Season 3 will introduce four new multiplayer maps for Black Ops Cold War, four new operators, plus fresh multiplayer modes, weapons and more.
The Season 3 update will be available in Black Ops Cold War on April 20 at 9pm PT (April 21 at 5am BST) and for Warzone on April 21 at 9pm PT (April 22 at 5am BST).
According to Raven, the Season 3 update will be approximately 8.1 – 13.1 GB for Black Ops Cold War and 25.2 – 25.9 GB for owners of Warzone who have the latest updates for either game.
