Importance of Xbox 720/PS4 graphics jump

4.7
We’re just a few days away from 2012, which could give us a taste of what the Xbox 720 will include thanks to a possible unveil next year, if current web rumors are anything to go by. The chances of the Xbox 720 being released in 2012 is slim to none in our opinion, although more leaks and rumors are surfacing as we get nearer to a release date.

One popular concept design website showcased a “next Xbox” design that could be, and can be seen in an earlier article. The images are nothing like the radical designs we’ve seen in the past, and some say they look a lot like the current Xbox 360. You’d expect the hardware to jump considerably after so many years, and it does with this concept design including a 2TB hard drive, GPS, a GPU with 8-cores and following some of the latest rumors, a built in webcam that could be used for Kinect type gaming as standard.

The debate that never seems to end with console gaming tends to be one of gameplay vs. graphics, and while some of us want both, others feel that gameplay is more important than graphics and vice versa. Enhancements like giving every GTA 5/6 pedestrian unique mentalities would be possible with next-gen hardware, although it’s fair to say with the next-generation we’d expect a big graphics jump, and for us this is more important when playing games in 2012/2013/2014, we want ultra real graphics and gameplay thanks to the leaps in technology since the release of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3.

We must also remember that the next-gen consoles have to last much longer than PCs in graphics terms, so seasoned gamers expect revolutionary graphics and maybe much more than current PC hardware thanks to partnerships with manufactures. This task would be harder thanks to the time it takes to launch a new console, although the machine is dedicated for gaming, which gives a massive advantage.

In the last year we’ve seen more and more YouTube videos trying to show what the Xbox 720 and PS4 graphics would look like, and this is mostly done by using PCs that have the latest processor and graphics hardware, which could well be the standard for the upcoming console hardware. You can see a video below this article, and we’d love to hear what you think about graphics like this rendered in real time (NOT pre-rendered cutscenes), imagine gameplay like this on the next-gen console.

How important will graphics be to you when buying the PS4 or Xbox 720 (as it’s commonly known)?

If every game is going to look like that then it's going to be one hell of a gaming generation.

Over time people will begin to realize that technical limitations don't really matter.

What matters is the limit set by Microsoft and Sony i.e. MS refuses to let devs host certain types of dlc for free, they overprice everything in arcade, and don't let devs include mods.

See, that is the glory of PC, you're free. I'm not bound to a single service, I can use Steam, Origin, whatever. If you don't like something, you can switch to something else i.e. I couldn't ever be bothered to pay $60 to play online when I could get it somewhere else for free without having to buy a whole new system. Hell, I'm not even bound to Windows, I could install Ubuntu and emulate all my games through Wine if I wanted to. Graphics don't matter, gameplay does.

I feel like consoles are at a plateau, things run just fine, given I would love a new console, but with all of the updates they do, things look and play just fine and feel contemporary. I don't see why they are pushing for a new console so hard when in reality the lifespan of the 360 and PS3 still has plenty of time left. I guarantee with the way the economies are worldwide and with inflation, the launch of the next console will be big, but you will see many more people still on the 360 as they wait to get the money to catch up unless the new console is priced somewhere reasonable in the $300-$450 range. Only time will tell, but I'm excited :)

I only partially agree here... I feel that gameplay is the most important aspect when judging a game, yet I find myself unable to enjoy a game with terrible graphics. I'm picky about games to the point where, if I notice a consistent flaw in textures, it'll ruin the game, because I'll know it's there and I'll always see it. I hate MW3 for how cheesy the skins of the buildings are. You go to them, and it looks so fake... Plus, on half the buildings, the textures are slightly off, like floating off of the face of the building. That's just me.

Well Graphics arn't that important to me. I hope the next gen consoles can make it so games can be bigger and better.

DemonSurfer The graphics look amazing compared to the PS3 and 360 "now" but if you have a high end gaming PC your already pretty damn close to this already..
anyways Nintendo always prove it's gameplay that matters ( as it should be ).. although graphics and sound are a nice bonus it's noobs that go for graphics over gameplay.
Completely agree

iTRu3_Vengeance Xbox and Playstation will never have the same graphics as a PC.
If they're using technology from today, then the PC components will be years ahead in a few years time as they are at the moment.

PC's graphics are always upgrading. For xbox and ps3 they'll be using ones from the near future and not next year, as it would cost so much more.
If they want price to be cheaper, it'll be components used from today.

Youre wrong. Ever opened up an xbox 360? Same parts as a windows 95 pc.

Yes I have, and Windows 95 is beyond old.
The components in there aren't the best. They could be better.
For the next xbox they'll be using components from today and not next year. They may be able to get a discount of some sort but they wont be better than a PC, nor will it be the same as a PC.

Hey **** up top ain't isn't a word and you used the wrong too so there is a grammar lesson you fu.ck tard

Be quiet. I didn't type "ain't", clearly you did. Learn to read before you make yourself look like a fool. Learn manners. Gtfo.

Xbox? yeah, maybe

Well think back guys... Back in 2005, the xbox 360 had a 400$ price tag. Now, factor in inflation, and the upgraded hardware + software, and put it together. Realistically, we're looking at a 600+$ machine. Just my opinion.
