Anonymous vows internet blackout if Stop Online Piracy Act is passed

4.6
Hacktivist group Anonymous has promised to strike back with an internet blackout if the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is approved. A vote on the legislation was delayed this week and is not likely to be held until the new year. However, Anonymous suggested that this delay is a smokescreen, and that the law "further proves the reality of corporate rule and totalitarianism".

"SOPA tramples civil rights laws, fair use, freedom of press and freedom of speech. Under SOPA an average person could be arrested, fined, sued and spend time in a federal prison for as little as uploading a video to YouTube or even linking to one," Anonymous said in a statement.

The group has vowed to strike back in a big way if the legislation becomes law, and has called on its members to deface web sites with protest messages in a bid to get the anti-Act message to as many people as possible.

"Let's replace the face of the internet with a clear message about how we feel about censorship. Replace the front page of every web site we can with a simple, clear protest page," Anonymous said.

"Encourage friends, businesses, organisations, social media to take a stand alongside us in the same way. Get this image and message everywhere online. Plant the seeds of dissent wherever they can grow."

The hackers said that supporters should also deface billboards and advertisements with similar messages.

"Get people talking. Put the truth not only where it can be seen, but where it cannot be avoided. This is something everyone can do. We are legion, this is our voice, people are listening, we will be heard," the statement said.

Zirtex Anonymous is stupid as hell. If they want to help the people they would do something way more smarter then a blackout to the internet. It's not going to help anyone by doing a blackout to the internet. They are going to end up getting caught like they always do. Hack the government internet or some **** like that. Instead of a blackout of everyone else internet. They are just being childish about this stuff. Plus everyone knows that most of the time you illegal download music and sometimes movies. Anonymous go piss off and get a real life.
your right about them getting caught and nothing happening but if this bill passes the US economy will drop by 24%

MrFunEGUY For ALL saying that you wouldn't get arrested and fined for the things you put online, you're wrong. You CAN be with this bill. Oh and to the Kid that said it was all good because Activision will allows us, Activision is NOT the only video game publisher in the world, let alone publishing in general. This bill needs some serious amends to it, or everything we see and love on the internet is gone.

Say goodbye to:
Gaming Youtube
Most Free Porn Sites
Movie Sites
and so much more.

I used Activison as an example. Come on, your trying to sound smart but can't use common knowledge. It doesn't mean Gaming on Youtube will be gone, and even if it isn't allowed in the US it can still be published anywhere else in the world and, why should free movie sites not be illegal? Or illegally downloading your music or movies? Come on man, get a brain.

I understand what you're saying, but it a null point anyhow. It can be published elsewhere but you better believe that youtube's regional restrictions will be seen on those videos [As in you can't watch if you're not from the place]. Free mvoie sites should be illegal, but that doesnt meand we dont love 'em ;) and anyways your example does not constitute all companies. It constitutes one company. Do you think companies are going to take time to do this stuff. The bill just needs to be edited. Thats all.

The whole US would go into a riot. This literally will make the internet BLAND AS HELL. Just another law for the rich to get richer while the poor get poorer. Since a consumer is actually paying money for the originally free content that means more money out of pocket and more that goes into the pockets of multi-million dollar companies. How is this law in any way HELPING exactly???

This is rather good news, yet anonymous are not just internet hackers for anyone reading. They are general protesters, i was in london 2 weeks ago and saw a small group of 'followers' and they were protesting because of pensions (uk residents should know) I for one give my fullest support to them in order to help stop SOPA.

How are they stupid? they're fighting for our freedom and liberty if your from America like me then its against the amendments to not have free speech and soon it will happen to your countries. Anon is the reason why we havent gone under yet. look what happened in libya and egypt that could well happen here and when it does you want to be on the winning side which is the people not the government. Anon represents the people and is against the governments wrong doings like SOPA. So think twice before you go against the 99% in america

I'm on there side. The internet is a free place and your right, you shouldn't post up copyrighted things, but if you actually listen and research you would find out that the makers of call of duty all like when people post up videos because it is free advertising.

And what about all you porn lovers. That will be completely gone as pornography is 99% copyrighted on websites that will remain anonymous.

But the real point of me writing this that Americans need to stop giving the government so much power over us. Do you want them to start turning off shows on TV such as 2 and a half men, southpark and other offensive shows because they feel it is inappropriate for you to watch. NO, you don't.

And I don't support hacking or cheating, but this time anonymous is right. You don't have to support them, but just read this and understand it.
