Veteran Assassin’s Creed writer announces he’s leaving Ubisoft

Darby McDevitt, the Assassin’s Creed series’ most prominent acting writer, has left Ubisoft.

During more than a decade at Ubisoft Montreal, McDevitt created stories and dialogue for Assassin’s Creed games Revelations, Black Flag, Unity, Origins and Valhalla.

McDevitt shared the news of his departure on social media on Friday, but did not say where he would work next.

“Today is my last day at Ubisoft Montreal,” he wrote. “After a decade of working with brilliant people, creating stories & characters for an incredible series, & interacting with our wonderful fans, I have decided to set forth on a new adventure…”

The writer’s exit means that Assassin’s Creed has now lost its two most experienced loremasters.

Corey May, the lead writer and narrative designer behind the original Assassin’s Creed game and its earliest sequels, left Ubisoft in 2015.

While the Assassin’s Creed series started at Ubisoft’s Montreal studio, it later saw instalments from Quebec and Sofia.

Ubisoft will launch Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s first major expansion, Wrath of the Druids, on April 29, 2021.

The first of two confirmed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla story expansions, Wrath of the Druids will see players travel to Ireland to uncover the mysteries of an ancient druidic cult.

A second Assassin’s Creed Valhalla story expansion, The Siege of Paris, will retell the Viking invasion of France in 845 AD when it arrives in the summer of 2021.
