Sony confirms PlayStation Store will stop selling movie and TV content

The PlayStation Store will stop offering TV and movie content for purchase or rental, Sony Interactive Entertainment has said.

From August 31, 2021, the video content will no longer be available via the digital storefront, the company confirmed on Tuesday. However, existing purchases will still be available to access.

In a statement published on the PlayStation website, SIE’s head of Video Business Vanessa Lee said the decision was driven by the growth of streaming services on PS4 and PS5.

“At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change,” Lee wrote.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.”

The video boss added: “When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices.

“We thank our fans for their continued support, and we look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation.”

A large number of streaming services are currently available on PS4 and PS5, including Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV and more.

Movies are still good to sell. Sometimes buy movies on Xbox store to own.
