You Think You Want a CoD4 Remake, But You Don’t – Treyarch

4.4
Recently, David Vonderhaar, Game Design Director at Treyarch, opened up a dialogue with fans revealing what kind of thinking goes into developing a Call of Duty game.

It goes without saying that the Call of Duty franchise has millions of players who play online, 0ver 30 million, to be more accurate. With as much praise as these developers are receiving for building such a popular game, there is most likely an equal if not greater amount of criticism they must face every day. With this many CoD fans, there is bound to be more than a few who are likely to share what they think the game should be like, legitimate or not, in an extremely vocal matter, negative or positive. Vonderhaar, who recently directed last year’s Black Ops, admits that when building a CoD game, it takes much more than just implementing what the fans want.

Vonderhaar put it very nicely while quoting Henry Ford: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” Simply put, fans don’t always know exactly what they want. It’s the job of developers to figure out precisely what they are trying to express. Vonderhaar states, “I always ask you what you want and the problems you have so I can always put in context. And I always will.” He continued, “if we aren’t trying every day to give you the thing you don’t yet know you want, then I don’t deserve this job.” It sounds like a daunting task, but Vonderhaar believes in innovation.

If we are to be completely honest here, we know what a good number of Call of Duty fans always “say” they want the “next” CoD to be like: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. “COD4 was a great game; we stand on the shoulders of giants. Some of you want to relive that,” said Vonderhaar. However, he truthfully added that “it would be neither innovation or evolution.” It can be speculated that the reason why fans request such a thing is because for many, CoD4 was their “first” CoD experience. Your first experience in almost anything tends to be the most memorable. However, Voderhaar reminds us that “you can make new ‘firsts’ and if don’t go for that as hard as possible then we shouldn’t be here.”

A remake would be nice for cod4, but if they actually updated the game maybe to get rid of those hackers it'd be fine and maybe promote it with coming out with a anniversary edition or something. And for those who say mw3 is like mw2, your pretty off lol. Mw3 isnt very good.

I agree, I wish they would just stop it here with MW3 and could stick with it, instead of a new one each year.

He says that people may want a remake of COD4 because it was their first COD. This may be true but the true reason why I, and others, want something close to COD4 is that Call of Duty 4 was a simple game. Not simple as in easy but simple in the way that there were not too many options to overwhelm people. What I am trying to say is that MW2/BOPS/MW3 all pushed COD further and added some great things. The downside is each COD is trying to out-do the previous game. This leads to unnecessary things being added. When there are all these ideas like secondary shotguns & Killstreaks that encourage camping, it ruins the game.

The ideal call of duty for me would be a modern game with many weapons(but not too many), a streak system that doesnt have those super high streaks(nuke or jug suits)but mainly make the game even. too many times there are weapons that are rarely used because they are not that good in the game. There needs to be weapons that have the same effectiveness as other weapons in its class(ex. assault riffles in MW2 were all good/decent excluding the F2000)

What i liked the most about COD4 was that u could not pick you streak. u automatically are on a 3-5-7. with 7 streak as highest it decreased camping which increased the playability of the game. This leads to a game liked by many people and a game that is fairly easy to pick up and play.

I love cod4, it was my first fps, iv'e been to tenth and deranked myself to get there again. I have cod4 for pc & xbox and I love it. but what's the point of a remake when the original was so good? Treyarch would probably ruin the fun cod4 had for me by making guns overpowered.

He has a point because it doesn't matter which CoD it is, everyone is going to talk shit. Whether it's MW2, Black Ops, or MW3. Someone isn't going to like it and complain, expect that with every single CoD they make from here on out.
