Minecraft is immensely popular, and with gamers having access to blocks on-the-go in both Android and iOS devices with Minecraft Pocket Edition, the game’s fan base is bigger than ever. That has developer Mojang working hard on how to improve the portable version of its game. Judging by most reviews, it was an easy call; add Survival Mode.

The company’s own Daniel Kaplan outlines in a blog post what they’re working on and why some much-wanted updates have taken longer to get out than hoped for, explaining, “we just wanted to make sure that the iOS version was on par with the Android version before continuing the work since it is quite complicated to deal with different versions with different features,” to which he adds, “we have one small bug fix update that is waiting for iOS that is already out on the Android. So let’s move on.” And move on we shall, with a number of bullet points Kaplan provided for us, which we will forward to you all below, which point out what’s next for the Pocket Edition:

• A new file system – to make sure we can support items and mobs in the world
• Item system – to be able to pick up items
• Crafting – we know you want this :) This will probably need some iterations since the interface will be customized for the touch devices
• Inventory system
• Mobs – animals and enemies!
• Optimizing rendering code – we are experimenting with caves but need to make it work better before we are able to release it
• Clean up of code and overall optimization


While building the most unimaginable pieces of work is a lot of fun in Minecraft, running around hunting for creepers may be just as satisfying, so the addition of Survival Mode is a much welcomed update, whenever it does come out.
