Epic Games Store reports a surge in users to 160m

The Epic Games Store has reported a surge in users in its 2020 report to 160m – an increase of nearly 50% compared to the previous year.

In a new report summarising its 2020 performance, Epic says its daily active users were up 192% to 31.3m, with a peak of 13 million concurrent players (up from 7M in 2019). Monthly active users in December rose from 32 million in 2019 to 56 million.

In comparison, rival Steam saw a record 120 million monthly users in 2020, daily active users of 62 million, and peak concurrent users hit 24.8 million. Both platforms would have benefitted from a boost in games activity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Epic says much of its work in 2021 will be centered on opening the store to more developers who want to release their titles on the Epic Games Store. Epic’s library grew from 190 games in 2019 to 471 in 2020, and it released 103 weekly free games.

“In 2021, we’re going to rapidly expand the catalog of new titles available on the Epic Games Store even further by providing developers with self-publishing tools for the EGS Platform and we’ll be releasing details on those specific plans soon,” it said.

“We want a smooth, seamless experience for developers looking to bring their titles to the Epic Games Store. This unlocks the ability for Epic Games Store customers to purchase the games they want, when they want while developers enjoy a much fairer revenue share split.”

Epic says there’s “a major priority” to release more community-oriented features such as Wishlists, Achievements, Player Profiles and more social features.

Epic Games recently acquired the Cary Towne Center shopping mall in North Carolina, which it will transform into its new headquarters.

Unreal Engine firm Epic has been based in Cary for over 20 years. The Cary Towne Center mall, which is about a 10-minute drive from the company’s existing HQ, was reportedly acquired for $95 million.
