Gabe Newell Weighs in on Cyberpunk 2077 Release

3.5
It’s no secret that the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 has been somewhat of a disaster, and that’s putting it mildly. The game launched in an often unplayable state on last-gen consoles and has multiple bugs and glitches across all platforms. The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 has been so bad that CD Projekt Red is now facing multiple lawsuits for how it spoke about the game to investors. Fortunately, Cyberpunk 2077 does have one person in its corner, the ever-elusive co-founder of Valve, Gabe Newell.

In an interview with New Zealand news outlet 1 News, Newell said he has “a lot of sympathy with a situation that every game developer finds themselves in.” However, as the co-founder of Valve, the company that owns and operates Steam, Newell also had some insights into the reception of Cyberpunk 2077 on PC. “All I know is that there are a lot of very happy gamers in the PC space,” Newell said. “Which are the ones that are most visible to us.” PCs are arguably the best place to play Cyberpunk 2077, especially if you have a high-end rig. However, while the game may perform well, bugs and glitches are still prevalent.

Newell’s sympathy didn’t end there though. He also found some common ground with CD Projekt Red regarding some extreme reactions players have had towards the company for Cyberpunk 2077‘s performance. According to the article from News 1, Newell said that he still receives abusive emails about Valve’s games. Jokes about Half Life 3 do, eventually, go too far. However, instead of responding to those messages, Newell treats them as learning experiences. “When people have those kinds of reactions, my first thought is that this is an opportunity for us,” Newell said. “And I assume that the Cyberpunk 2077 developers are similarly just using it to crank through and make improvements that are going to be beneficial to their customers.”

Still, Newell was impressed with CD Projekt Red’s latest title. “There are aspects of the game that are just brilliant,” Newell said. “And it just shows a tremendous amount of work — it’s unfair to throw stones at any other developer, because just getting something as complex and ambitious as that out the door is pretty amazing.”
