2021 is over two weeks old at this point, but there haven't been many new game releases. Outside of the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World re-release, gamers don't have many 2021 games to play just yet, and so are likely looking back on 2020 games to take up their time. And now that 2020 has come to a close, gamers can take a look at lists of the highest-rated games that were released last year when deciding what game they should play next.
Review aggregate site Metacritic has released its lists for the highest-rated video games of 2020 for each platform. Not only does this include lists for various video game consoles, but for those that prefer gaming on PC as well. As it so happens, 2020 was pretty strong year for PC gaming enthusiasts, seeing the release of a variety of games that earned widespread critical acclaim, including five titles that scored a 90 critic average or higher.
The highest-rated PC game of 2020 was Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality game from Valve that serves as the first Half-Life series game released in over a decade. Half-Life: Alyx is the highest-rated VR game released to date, and to many, is a great example of the impressive experiences that are possible in the medium. As VR becomes more popular and more widely adopted, one has to imagine that future lists of best PC games of the year will include even more VR titles.
Here are the 10 highest-rated PC games of 2020, according to Metacritic:
Half-Life: Alyx - 93
Hades - 93
Microsoft Flight Simulator - 91
Crusader Kings 3
Spelunky 2 - 91
There is no game: Wrong dimension - 89
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 - 88
Ori and the Will of the Wisps - 88
Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Halo 3 - 88
F1 2020 - 88
While Half-Life: Alyx took the top spot on the PC gaming list for the best of 2020, the rest of the list is comprised of more traditional titles. In second place was Hades, the acclaimed roguelike from Supergiant Games that is only available on PC and Nintendo Switch at the time of this writing.
Meanwhile, the company that released the most highest-rated PC games for 2020 was Microsoft, with three titles under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella cracking the top 10 for highest-rated PC games. This includes Microsoft Flight Simulator, which had an impressive 91 average critic score, as well as Ori and the Will of the Wisps, which earned an 88. The addition of Halo 3 to Halo: The Master Chief Collection earned an 88, and while some may be surprised to see a re-release crack the top 10, it was Halo 3's PC debut, making it a much more notable launch than it would have been otherwise.
