Netflix Will no Longer Work on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS From June

4.4
Netflix bids goodbye to the criminally underrated Wii U.

The slow death of the Wii U sadly continues. Back in November, Nintendo confirmed they were shutting down the servers on Super Mario Maker, effective from March 31 this year and now, they’ve also confirmed that another big app will no longer work on the system.

As of June 30 this year, it has been confirmed that the official Netflix app will no longer function on either the Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles. While the app hasn’t been available for download since December 31 last year, it has now been made official that the service is being shut down on the two systems once and for all. A page on Nintendo’s official website states:

“Starting Dec 31st, 2020, the Netflix app will no longer be available for new users to download from Nintendo eShop on the Wii U console or Nintendo 3DS family of systems. During that time, it will be possible for existing users to re-download these applications. Service for existing users will continue until June 30th, 2021. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed Netflix on these platforms over the years.”

Despite mostly being forgotten about by this point, the Wii U is still cropping up in the news from time to time. Earlier this year, VBlank Entertainment released their popular title Shakedown: Hawaii onto the console and more recently, Nintendo accidentally listed the N64 classic Banjo Kazooie for release on the Switch’s predecessor, only to later apologise for what they called an “error”.

Either way, this news is a crying shame for the one person who still uses Netflix on their Wii U, how will they watch the second season of The Witcher now? Here’s hoping we get a Netflix app for the Nintendo Switch at some point in the not too distant future.

This sucks for people who still have these consoles and use them for netflix. I also never knew Netflix could be used on 3DS.
